UC Berkeley Transfer Thread 2018

Does anyone know for Precalc how they calculate gpa, I am transferring from De Anza and it says that the 3 precalc class count for 4.5 total semester units. Thanks

@hopefullTransfer You should create a UC Transfer Admission Planner (TAP) account. You just enter the classes you’ve taken and the grade you received in that class. If you scroll to the very bottom, it should show your calculated gpa for all UC transferable courses.

Stats:
applied math major
GPA: 3.72
Major: 4.0
IGETC: will be done by Spring
All other classes done, waited an extra year to boost GPA.
EC:
Year long internship at CS company
Math Tutor
Teacher for Computer Science Workshop
Member of computer Science club

Any thoughts?

@Ak1097 Dont worry too much about EC you have enough. With 4.0 you are almost guaranteed admission if Personal Statements are decent.

@hopangman I did that and it prints out the gpa from all classes, it doesnt take the special case into consideration. I visited UCB and asked them about the issue and they said that they will take the highest grade from the 3 and 1/2 units of second highest and use those. Hope this helps someone

My Stats:

Major: Media Studies

Major Prep: 2 left, will be done by the end of fall semester
IGETC: Done
TAP: No, but will have the TAP for UCLA because my school doesn’t offer one for Cal -_-

Schools Applying: Cal (Media Studies), UCLA (Sociology), UC Davis (Communication), UCSD (Communication)

EC:
-Executive Vice President of Phi Theta Kappa
-Secretary for Circle K International (along with community service)

Background:

First generation student

Any thoughts? I’m kinda worried I’m lacking in extra curriculars :frowning:

submission period begins in a month. have you guys completed your applications?

@hailey5799 I got accepted for Spring 2018 as a one-year political science transfer. If you have any questions, let me know.

That goes for all of you guys, too. I know I had my fair share of questions going into this process. I don’t know how much I’ll be able to help (or if I’ll be of any help at all), but I’ll try my best! Good luck to you all!

I’m going to the drop in transfer counseling on Friday, anyone been to it? Any advice on how early I should get there? @kookachim @annbern Thank you! I’m a bit lose since I’m doing this in one year rather than two. I want to do more extracurriculars but I don’t have the time. I work and have to help out my parents watching my sister, while taking 19 credits this semester and 22 next semester, I’m just swamped. Any advice on if that’s enough for ECs or not would be appreciated

@hailey5799 DUDE I know exactly how you feel. Taking 19 credits this sem and I have no time to get anything done haha. I kinda have the same issues you do with the ECs and all.

Also, this sounds kinda dumb, but can I put in what I’m going to be doing next semester in my EC’s section? I’m asking cause I got accepted for an internship next semester, but idk if I can put it in or not. On top of that, can I put in anything from HS(senior year only), considering that only ende about like 5 months ago for me?

Thank you guys so much!

@mantisaurus From what I’ve gathered talking to the counselors, they don’t like to see too much high school information. However, since you are a 1 year transfer, it would be good to namedrop stuff and explain how it has affected your college life. For example, if it says discuss leadership experience, you can say “ASB taught me leadership skills yadda yadda yadda. This has carried on into my college career through my experience with a club.”

@hailey5799 UC’s consider work as extracurriculars! Make sure to write on your PIQs about your work and how the experience has affected you.

Hi Guys,

I’m a Cal hopeful.

3.84 Transfer GPA from CCC

5 Honors Courses

Majoring in Political Economy

Changed majors halfway through CCC from Poli Sci to Econ. Going to try to finish math pre-req coursework required to apply to the Econ major during the first semester if accepted.

Howdy all! I got admitted for Fall 2017 as a mathematics major so I thought I’d pop in just in case you guys had any questions that only a veteran could answer. Good luck!

BTW I got in with a 4.00, prereqs cleared (except discrete math which I’m taking now), and literally no ECs besides work so really it seems safe to say that GPA and coursework is most important.

Oh, and one piece of unsolicited advice I’ll give is: get your diet and sleeping routine down PAT during this year before you start at Cal. It’s so sad for me to see how many of my peers are missing lectures and falling behind because they lack energy due to things that basic sleep hygiene and proper diet could fix. That probably seems like a pretty odd piece of advice to give, but it will seem less odd when you step foot in a lecture for your math 110 class (like I did this morning) to find that about 30-40% of the students enrolled in the class were in the lecture hall. Get the BASICS down, and you will already be ahead.

Plz chance me

Here’s my status:

Will complete all of them by 2018 spring

Chance me if you can
Again, Good Luck !!!

I’m feeling anxious about my application comparing myself to some other people (which I know many people will say I shouldn’t, but I can’t help it). Could someone give me constructive feedback on my application and where I could improve before I submit it?

Insight Questions: I wasn’t really a great student in high school and spent most of my time playing video games with my friends because it was just so much fun forgetting about the world. Now I realize how much set back I am and I’ve been gunning towards success in my classes since senior year of high school. I’ve also had family problems (yep, the common sad tale) that negatively impacted the environment I had at home. On the bright side, most of my peers who I’ve tutored and are dedicated to do better improved their average grades on exams from a C to a B-A.

I think that’s the gist of what I’m going to talk about (please no copying me, xd)

Background:
Asian
First Generation

Family Income: Lets say I’m in the lower end of the middle class.

Any thoughtful feedback would be helpful and calm this anxious feeling I’m having about not having a seemingly good enough application.

@andlecic

I think you have a great chance my dude. The only issue I see is your GPA(and I’m really nitpicking).

Also, in general should you put in things you’re going to be doing?

Chance me too plz:
GPA: 4.0
Major: Econ BA
IGETC: Gonna probably do at Berkeley if I get accepted. Not enough time rn

ECs(College):
Speech and Debate coach at my former HS
Assistant to the Speech Coach at my college
Intern for CHSSA
Part of a couple clubs
Got accepted for a legal internship at a good law firm
Part of the honors program
Philosophy paper undergoing review at Cornell and an honors society

ECs(HS, Senior year only):
Captain of Debate
Captain of Mock Trial

@hopangman
So for the two up there, should I just say something along the lines of “Ay I’m involved with Debate and Speech now because of my captaincy in senior year”?

Thanks guys

@mantisaurus I was having the same issues with you. I emailed a counselor and asked her specifically about my PIQs. In mine, I said something along the lines of “Leadership has always been an integral part of my character. In high school, I did NJROTC. (I explained it a little here). This has carried on into my college career by inspiring me to join the Associated Students” She responded by saying that she really liked how i namedropped the high school stuff, but was able to tie it into why it is relevant today. She said that theyre focusing on college stuff, but won’t mind if youre able to bring up high school stuff while saying how its affected your ec’s today.

@mantisaurus @hopangman I went to the drop in counselling at Berkeley and had my PIQs looked at, they told me both times that its okay if you have High school stuff that is pertinent to your essay in establishing how that trait developed but it shouldn’t be more than 1/3 to 1/2 of the essay, you need to tie it into what you did in college.

Just submitted my application lol Wish us all good luck
