for those of you who are worried because of weak EC… I am a CS (L&S) transfer from 2 years ago… my EC was very weak, but my GPA was good (4.0). So I guess your chances are high… @flaminhaute @futjewlaw @lunavieja @tman831 and others…Good luck to all of you…
Not to discourage you, but to be honest, I cannot say that you have a solid spec as an applicant to Cal. For lower schools like UCI or UCSD, maybe you can be chosen as one of the best applicants, but for Berkeley(especially EECS), there are tons of applicants who have similar EC with you and better GPA(4.0) than yours. I’m one of those but even I cannot guaruntee myself being accepted to Cal. But still, do not give up, because Cal sometimes accept students who are not as qualified.
@futjewlaw same here! My EC is even worse, I only worked and didn’t join a single club. Tho I held a leadership position at work so I’m hoping that makes up for some of it. Plus I hear that schools don’t care too much about ECs for in-state transfers.
@xela007 I;m actually in the same boat as them. Soc major, prereqs done, same GPA, but very little ECs. I hear that the UCs don’t care too much for ECs for in-state transfers.
This is purely anecdotal, while I meet a lot of applicants who have every EC under the sun and a 4.0, most of the actual students I’ve met in my major (Media Studies) have had much lower GPAs and little to no ECs because of work. I wouldn’t lose hope if you application doesn’t have 4 concurrent full time jobs, 2 startups, a couple of voluntourism trips, and 12 clubs you started up on your own.
Hey guys,
Only one week and I am super nervous!
CCC transfer
Major: Computer Science (L&S)
GPA: 3.83
Major requirements: done
L&S requirements: done
IGETC: not completed
EC: Math & Programming tutor
Intel CCMI mentorship
TAG: UCI (accepted for Software Engineering)
Honestly, pretty stressed out right now. I’m not necessarily worried about getting accepted more like having admission offer rescinded if I actually do get accepted. I applied to Econ with a 3.88 GPA and complete IGETC with two last courses in progress, currently have a C in my calculus class. I’m most definitely sure they are going to ask for a B for all classes at least since Econ is impacted. I switched from Poli Sci to Econ halfway through my community college career so rushed to try and get math done for ECON as it is a different track than Poli Sci. Now I think I may have shot myself in the foot switching majors and applying as an Econ major. I wonder if I end up with a C if I can ask to switch my major to Poli Sci if they pull a hypothetical acceptance?
hey so i know a bunch of people who got into Econ (not Haas) with a 3.5 GPA
@flaminhaute Yeah sometimes when you spend too much time on this forum you get a different picture of the candidates. Most people who spend time on a college admissions forum are probably people who care a lot about school, and hence usually have grades/ an app that would reflect that type of care. So on this forum you see a lot of people who have near perfect apps but in reality plenty of marginal students fill the gap, even to the elite schools. For the non-impacted majors, I rarely see people get rejected with 4.0s and all reqs done. They care wayyy more about ECs for HS students.
Crap don’t have much in way of ECs partly bc I’m a one year transfer also because I work 25 hours a week and the rest of the time I take care of my sister bc both my parents work, sister is 10.
I’m hoping they overlook my lack of ECs bc of that
im a one year transfer too! I only have two ec’s during this one year so i put all my high school stuff to fill everything up. other than that, i know my gpa isn’t good enough for berkeley anyways, i just applied to see haha.
are there any cog sci majors here?
@GoldenState1 It is to my understanding that if you are accepted, colleges will usually ask for a C or better for all your classes even for the major prep. Both UCSB and UCD have asked me to get at least a C or better for all of my classes even major prep, so I imagine Berkeley will ask for the same. Oh and I am a CS major which is also impacted.
@srafiq me, I’m a Cognitive Science major
@smsk if you don’t mind asking me your stats? (ps ik i’m not getting in my gpa is a 3.28)
@srafiq Sure
I’ve applied to UCD (tag approved), UCB, and UCLA for fall 18’.
Accepted: UCD (Cog. Sci), Sac State (Comp. Science), CSU Monterrey (Comp. Science)
Pending: UCB, UCLA
Major: Cognitive Science
GPA (3.95 with 87 units completed so far)
Major Prep: Done
IGETC: Done by spring
@Mitroyo I hope that’s the case. I got accepted to UC Santa Cruz with the only requirement that I finish current term with 2.0.
I couldn’t find any recent requirements for anybody that transferred recently when I searched last one was a few years ago and they had said 3.0 which I’m thinking may be because UCLA and UCB are extremely competitive.
On another note, my co worker got a much later decision on his UCSC application (1 month later than my acceptance) and his requirements were to maintain a 3.25! Wonder if it’s determined on a case by case basis in combination with major of just the major itself.
Either way thanks for giving me some hope! (Assuming I actually get accepted)
@smsk impressive! i think you have a pretty good chance at berkeley since it’s a small major and not impacted at all! and 87 quarter units right? i’m on a semester system right now haha. good luck!
You cannot switch majors last minute they said that on the app @srafiq
Less than a week! good luck everyone!
