@srafiq Thanks. Actually, I’m on semester system too. I’ve taken almost all of the comp. sci. and psych classes offered at my CC, so I’ve got AA degrees in Psych and Comp. Sci. However, Cognitive Science is kind of a tricky major, since very few courses are fully articulated between UCB and my CC.
I think most Cog. Sci. pre-reqs are different for every UC, so while I have almost 100% of pre-reqs completed for UCD, I was missing 3 courses for UCSD (so I didn’t apply) and I hope I’ll meet the requirements for UCB and UCLA but we’ll see in less than a week… Good luck to you too!
@hailey5799 I’ve heard from multiple reliable sources that the UCs don’t care too much for ECs for transfers. GPA and requirements are by far the priority. And I’d say you have a genuine reason for not participating in too many ECs (hope you mentioned it in your PS?). That’s one of the reasons why they don’t care as much about ECs for transfer as they do with HS, many CC students are forced to work, some even pay for everything by themselves.
@GoldenState1 I’m pretty dang sure that Cal and LA require at least a B in all prereq classes, with a 3.0 overall. I’ve seen it on multiple threads recently and I even have the requirement for UCSB currently.
There’s actually someone on this site that got his acceptance rescinded from Cal cuz he was 10 pts away from a B and ended up with a C in a class.
Tho from what I understand, they usually don’t enforce it that heavily. That guy was just unlucky.
Idk about changing your major just to switch to one that doesn’t have the prereq. Even if it is in your provisions, they might let it slide. I guess you’ll just have to wait and see. Sorry man wish I could provide you with better advice but no one knows if you’re gonna be able to change your major or not, it’s 100% situational.
Hey guys,
I am reposting and updating my stats. Please chance me!
I’ve heard that CS has become more competitive than EECS recently, and even harder to get in Is that true?

@ericbadmon thanks for the input. I figured as much as well so wasn’t getting my hopes up. 80% of my grade is in exams and the final, I’m at a 76% in the class. If I can manage a B on the next two exams and final I’ll be fine. Just nervous as heck because we’re going into what my professor has seen as the most challenging exams this Wednesday out of all of them from her previous courses.
@ericbadmon im also hoping worse case if I were to end up with a C, that the fact that you’re admitted as pre-Econ and not actually into the major could help me slide in as an exception. For Econ you have to take at least one Calculus based Stats/math class and one intermediate Econ course to apply to the major.
@smsk ohhh, thats so cool! and i know it is tricky, a lot of the classes aren’t offered at my cc either which is why i completed the courses for my alternate major for ucsd since it’s my number one. I never took calc so I hope I do get into at least my alternate major (psychology with a specialization in cognitive psychology)
@hailey5799 don’t worry about having a ton of extracurriculars. While that may be a big factor in freshmen decisions, it’s not as important for transfer applicants. I’m currently a transfer student at UC Berkeley and on my application, I had one big extracurricular and nothing else because I worked during community college and therefore had no time to be involved. As long as you explained your situation on the application, whether by just putting your work hours or talking about it in your essays, you should be good.
@srafiq I don’t know if they will let you change your major now, but I do know quite a few people who got to Berkeley and then decided to change their major (ex. one friend switched from Econ to Poli Econ, another switched from PoliSci to Sociology)
@hailey5799 yes, I did transfer last fall! Currently finishing up my second semester here. I really like it here at Berkeley but it can definitely get stressful. As a political science major, classes here ask for more critical thinking and general work than community college. But I really love the upper division classes I get to take because they are much more specific and in-depth than general ed.
As for being a transfer, it can be a bit hard as we only have 2 years here and everyone else has had since freshman year. However, the transfer community is absolutely amazing and its where I’ve met most of my friends. While sometimes Berkeley seems to forget about us, we have a lot of pride in each other and our accomplishments.
@GoldenState1 Hmmmm okay… Dude honestly I feel like they’ll let it slide but who knows, we won’t know until it happens. But talk to your prof about it. Tell him/her your acceptance is on the line. It may not be much but there’s always a chance he/she might be willing to work with you.
