Guys we’re all in this together. I know it’s technically competing but let’s just root for good news for everyone.
Best of luck to everyone didn’t mean to overly stress anyone out. Btw I’m not offended by @bobaboi comment because he’s right I am confident about getting admitted, I worked my ass off to put my self in the best position to get admitted. If I don’t get admitted, I would be pretty damn depressed but wouldn’t be the end of the world, My original plan was to coast through CC and just go to SJSU until my Econ professor challenged me and opened my eyes to getting into the best University possible. At the very least I’m going to UC Santa Cruz, or hopefully one of the privates I applied to. So again, I apologize to anyone affected by my posts, I thought I was being clear post after post that I had no idea what any of these signs meant nor had any idea about anyone’s chances including my own of getting admitted. Hope we all get admitted and see each other on campus!
is anyone else not allowed to set up a calnet account? it said I was forbidden lol
@ericbadmon That’s entirely true, but their frontal lobe wasn’t developed during high school (or even now unless they’re older than 25) either. I’m arguing that socioeconomic class plays a huge role in why people end up entering as freshmen straight from high school. For those who don’t, some of that poor planning and bad judgement is really just the result of life circumstances. It’s hard to prioritize school when you’re worried about the electricity staying on, or you don’t have the money for SAT tutors and violin lessons. Even just conditioning in high school from your parents is important; there is a reason that colleges ask about your parents’ highest level of education (some of that planning ahead is likely the parents’ hard work and not the student’s). But, I totally agree with what you are saying about how they view it. Even with an advantage, they worked extremely hard in high school and watched as they got accepted to UC Berkeley when their friends did not. Suddenly, they meet transfers who didn’t have the same experience. In that sense, it seems like the transfers somehow cheated the system. The freshmen may have earned their place, but that does not mean the transfers students earned it any less.
@Sanla124 that’s great! I’ve been pretty great. Mainly just focusing on keeping my grades up for grad school.
@goldencub how’s the grade deflation? Is it as bad as people make it out to be?
@lunavieja Preach!
hey guys… I’ve been reading the post. I had the 4-2 address switch on monday as well. I did not get an alumni email tho. I tried the housing thing through Calnet and I tried resetting my password since I dont know a number yet (I havent had summer classes) … so I received an email from Calnet to reset my catchphrase… this email is unlike an email from MAP to reset my password. dont know if this means much
@GoldenState1 The average GPA for Philosophy is something like a 3.4. They give out a lot of B+'s, but not too many B’s, and few grades lower than a B-. You really have to work for an A-, and they don’t hand out A’s. I’d say it’s not insanely difficult to get a 3.7 in philosophy classes here (A- average), but doing better than that takes a lot of hard work.
So although there is grade deflation, it really isn’t that crazy. I think a good rule is that you should expect to have your Cal GPA be 0.2-0.3 less than your CC GPA. But I know people who have actually increased their GPA after coming here to study philosophy, so there are exceptions to the rule.
Longtime lurker here! I can’t believe the wait is all over Friday! I have a flight that morning and idk when the results are to be posted. It’s gonna be a long flight lmao. Hoping the best for everyone!!
Hate to start more conspiracy theories but what do your guys’s calnets say under my affiliations?
STUDENT-TYPE-NOT REGISTERED
@neka4729 be careful people don’t like conspiracies in this thread lol! But I’ll throw some fuel on the fire, mine says not registered as well.
@goldencub thanks for that info! I’m an Econ major (9th lowest GPA amongst CAL Majors) hoping to at least achieve a 3.5 to be competitive for jobs after graduation if I’m lucky enough to get in.
@goldenclub Best of luck
@GoldenState1 It is for engineering
How do you setup a calnet account without being accepted? Thanks.
@smugguy90 you like “apply” for a summer session (you just give your info)
I wouldn’t worry too much over grade deflation and your GPA while attending Cal, as the only folks interested in it are grad schools, should that be your route. Your employers are not going to be much interested in the details of your GPA - they will be impressed enough with a degree from Berkeley itself.
Aim High. Worry less. Do the work, stay out of the results.
Just apply yourself and do your best, regardless of where you end up going!
I would love to go to Stanford for grad school! Assuming my wife allows me to even go to Grad school after this! Haha but that’s true on the degree thanks!
@loewasp true, unless you’re looking into internships. Then your gpa is essential.
