@GoldenState1 I’m also an econ major!
@lunavieja - I am going to disagree on the reasoning behind asking about parent’s educational background. The UC system has made a point to open up the system to more first generation college students. The intent is to have more, not less students whom come from different circumstances.
I believe this is data-driven and that the data says that first gen college students either are equal to, or possibly are MORE successful than students that come from privileged circumstances.
Think about how many tech leaders, authors, artistis, etc., today who are first generation Americans. Many have parents who were migrants, refugees or just did not have a ‘suburban’ upbringing.
I was looking at previous years threads for freshmen and they said that STUDENT-TYPE-PRESIR means nothing, there were random people who didn’t even apply and had that as their affiliation.
@Shoumei nice! Have you seen that CAL is starting a data science major in the fall?! There’s “domains” that are like concentrations within data science and Econometrics is one of them! If I get in I’m def gonna go for a double major!
@GoldenState1 I want to double major too, hopefully economics and political science bc idk if I could transfer to political economy, what do you mean by econometrics?
@GoldenState1 I actually haven’t… that sounds super cool. I’m not too confident about my chances tbh. I’ve just started the application every year since 2014, but never finished it, so I figured this was my last shot XD I want to double major in econ and Japanese (i think it’s under east asian studies or languages or smthn). But yeah I honestly haven’t researched much since 2014/15 because it would be so surprising to get in
@hailey5799 a lot of people that don’t get accepted into the Econ major during their first semester go into the political economy major. I was originally debating applying to political economy instead as I wouldn’t have needed two semesters of calculus, but decided I wanted to study Econ as I find it super fascinating. My original goal was to minor in PE but now I’m going to try to double major in DS and minor in city planning.
Econometrics is the branch of economics that’s is more applied based and used to crunch and predict which is why it’s a domain for data science since a lot of data science is modeling and predicting!
@Shoumei that’s super cool man, Japanese culture is interesting. You never know, there’s posts of people getting in every year with 3.2 and up!
@GoldenState1 I originally wanted to double major Econ and Poli Sci, but wanted a double minor in Near Eastern Languages and Middle Eastern Studies or Creative Writing (Still deciding), but if I do Political Economy and double minor Near Eastern Languages and Creative Writing, I have more time, since I ahve all the Political Economy pre-reqs done anyway. Idk if that all made sense.
@hailey5799 totally makes sense! Political economy def sounds like a better major for you because it has a higher foreign language requirement and the major you basically build a concentration which you could do while incorporating your minors!
@GoldenState1 That’s the plan, because I want to work something in the international range concerning law, idk what yet, still figuring that out.
I don’t want to freak anyone out, and I could be completely wrong but I was checking on previous year’s thread and everyone so far, I was checking all their replies, but I didn’t for everyone so this could all be wrong, so DON’T FREAK OUT, but if it said STUDENT-TYPE something - PRESIR it seems like everyone with that got in, if it said NOT REGISTERED they were waitlisted or rejected, but I DON’T KNOW FOR SURE, take this with a grain of salt.
How do you get an ID for the cal central?
Certainly there are more options while in school for the students with the higher GPAs, I agree.
My point is that the only time the GPA is of significant importance is while IN school.
The practical world outside of academia isn’t much interested in it.
It also appears that some people got their acceptances early on cal central, so if you’re antsy it might be worth making one conspiracy theories or not
Hi guys. I just went ahead and “applied” for the summer courses. I then got an email to setup a calnet id about 20 minutes after I filled out the form. I finished creating the ID but it still says that it cannot find my info when I try to login. The email says it can take up to 10 minutes but it has been over 10 minutes thus far. Any idea on how long it usually takes for the new account to be usable?
EDIT: It started working after I reset my password. For what it is worth, mine says that I am PRE-SIR as well.
Idk, I did the registration last night, and didn’t check again till this morning and then set the account up @ucdtransfer
Where are you guys seeing the Student Type Presir thing?? I don’t know where to look.
