UC Berkeley Transfer Thread 2018

@scariot wow thank you so much for the response!! Honestly this major sounds really great and just like the thing I’m looking for. Really appreciate this as it’s very helpful. hahaha I’ve heard about the meme page. tysm I’ll definitely let you know if I have any more questions in the future.

Waiting for decisions and freaking out on my end. So how is everyone else doing?

@hailey5799 not even thinking about it. I’m just ready to get school over with. I’ve done the best I can do for the last 3 years of CC, got a pretty good GPA in a tougher premajor course, at a decent CC. I’d say just be happy probably the hardest part of our entire college life is done.

To all those applying as Econ, Stat 20 will screw you b/c of how competitive the curve is. Econ 100a with Kamala was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but go to GSI Office Hours to learn about the material and different types of questions. The GSIs will hopefully be on your side. The fall semester was so traumatizing from the pressure to do well to declare that I’m still learning how to function for the Spring.

I made it into Econ, but I decided to switch to Enviro Econ and Policy because I can’t stand theory. If it’s applied/practical, I love it. Also, don’t take any major elective as a joke/easy until you’ve taken the 1st midterm and can get a taste of what it’s like.

I took Stat 131a with a newer professor, so the material was fair. I know people that worked harder than me who didn’t make it. What I mean by that is, I didn’t self-study as much as I should have. I asked GSIs questions a lot. Kamala’s tests are honestly, like thinking under pressure tests. Just think about what it’s asking and keep track of the time. It’s not impossible, but it’s draining.

Putting themselves in the shoes of a pre-med, if anyone here had to choose between attending UC Berkeley (MCB), UCLA (Microbio, Immunology, & Molecular Genetics), and UC Davis (Biochem), which would you choose and why?

@TheLongRun Hypothetically if I get in, as someone who wants to double major Econ and Polsc you have successfully scared the living daylights out of me. How hard is it to get admitted into Econ?

@scariot Haha thanks for that! You’re not alone when it comes to stupid grammar mistakes… nice to see that they don’t care too much about the little ones!
And yeah I always see the personal emails as a good sign… of course, they could be emailing a student because he/she raised a red flag or b/c he/she is a borderline candidate and they need further info to make a decision, but the fact that they’re emailing you about courses shows that they care and want to accept you! Imo, at least… I actually got an email recently from the general UCs email asking me if I could explain a gap in my education (took 1.5 years off before starting CC).
As far as races go, there’s a lot of speculation over whether they use race in the admissions process. The schools say they don’t because they’re not allowed to (other private institutions can openly admit to it), but the statistics point to another story. But then again, correlation doesn’t prove cause and effect!
And for the spanish thing, I talked to admissions about it and they told me that as long as you finish IGETC, which is between the student and the CC, they won’t require any further foreign language courses for gen ed. And IGETC requires 2 years of HS. I’m sure your requirements were different cuz you were transferring from a UC.

@philosophyCAL Housing is not guaranteed. I transferred last year and didn’t get a housing offer so I had to find off- campus housing.

@finiteconcrete is it hard for transfers to find off campus housing that is decent/good quality?

@hailey5799 You’re going to either have to take 15-18 units a semester to double and hopefully you can get a 5th semester. More than likely, you’ll have to take summer classes too.

It’s not easy. I just hope Farrell doesn’t teach 100a in the fall, since he’s teaching it this spring. He literally teaches 100a at a graduate student level, since he teaches grad students primarily. It’s surprising that anything can get worse than Kamala. If you get 100b with Steven Wood, good luck. He’s not horrible but his tests are tough. It’s practically all graphs. I would have hated that class.

Honestly, you can’t just be hard working in Kamala’s class, unless you have a lot of time. I know people that put in more self-study hours than me who unfortunately did not do as well in her class. You have to be smart, be good at test taking, and never leave a page blank. Asking GSIs questions and writing what they draw on the board/explain helps. It would be better to have like a separate notepad rather than continue notes in your regular notebook.

I would say that doubling with Enviro Econ and Policy is more doable because the econometrics course for that version isn’t as bad as the Econ 140 or 141.

I was astounded at how many people that I saw regularly didn’t make it but only a few did. If you do switch to EEP, you have to get a 3.0 overall to get into the College of Natural Resources. Had I known that EEP in CNR guarantees the major vs EEP or Econ in L&S, which requires a 2.7 in pre-reqs, I would have gone EEP CNR to get that peace of mind being declared.

Look into Political Economy and see if that fits with your goals of political science and econ.

I wish that I wasn’t as pessimistic about this whole experience, but if you’re good at time management, you’ll do better than me. I literally had no fun in my first semester because I was so determined.

I also can’t wait to get out of here in a year. Fit is more important that prestige. I’ve literally have been at the unhappiest I’ve ever been.

@TheLongRun I got a D in my Micro class, the summer after graduation, it was a three week intercession class the fisrt week coincided with finals and graduation, but I’m retaking it now and will end with an A, will that hurt my chances greatly or getting admitted to Econ if I hypothetically get into Berkeley?

Hey Everyone,

1 W in my Public Health Class but I only got a W because I thought it was a required class and when I realized it wasn’t I dropped but it went through late. I was only in the class for a week. I explained it in the essay. The class does not transfer over, was not a required class, and also is not listened in assist.
About me: Persian, born in the US but I am not a first-generation student, both my parents went to graduate school.

I really hope I get in! Let me know what you all think are my chances!

@Calhopeful2018 you’re at DVC too? Nice. I’d say you’re in.

@hailey5799 Yes haha! I’m Nina btw! Most my classes are at the San Ramon DVC campus but I take some at pleasant hill too! How about you, I saw that you are from the same community college!

@Calhopeful2018 Nice! My names Hailey in case you didn’t know lol. I take most of mine at the Pleasant Hill but I live near the SR campus.

if i dropped a class with a “w” (non-major course, no affiliation with G.E)

do i need to report it? and also can a “w” on my last semester grades result in rescindment if i do get accepted?

@hailey5799 It depends if you applied as Poli Sci or Econ because I remember that they don’t consider double majors for admissions. For Econ, I remember that the lower div CC pre-reqs have to be a 3.0 at your respective CC. If your A for sure replaces your D, you’re probably going to be ok. Google this stuff regarding transfers. I don’t know about your chances. I wouldn’t worry about it in general. You’ll find happiness in whatever school you get into. Prestige isn’t everything except in certain industries, like investment banking.
