UC Berkeley Transfer Thread 2018

@hailey5799 freaking out, only time, I have ever wanted time to speed up. The wait is killing me.

@philosophyCAL I feel you, I’m have midterms rn and I can’t even, I NEED decisions to come out!

If Cal Day is April 21, should we expect transfer decisions before then? It would only make sense. It would be pretty lame for transfer students and poorly planned if they held Cal Day before transfer decisions were posted

@Twenmi it has been confirmed that decisions come out on April 27th

So I just wanted to post my stats and see what people think my chances are. Personally, I don’t feel I’m likely to be accepted, but stranger things have happened. My gpa is 4.43, most of my pre reqs are finished but there are a few classes that aren’t offered currently at my cc. I work around 10 hours a week at a sushi restaurant, and more in the summer. I have a low income background, which I talk about in my personal insight. Not trying to use that as a crutch, just wanted to paint a picture of the obstacles I’ve had to overcome. I am pretty confident about my personal insight, I enjoy writing and I put a great deal of thought into my responses. If I get denied, I’ll probably shoot for spring of 2019. I’m an English major, which has an acceptance rate of around 44% which is pretty good for Cal. Looking forward to and appreciate your responses.

Is there a Cal Day for transfer students?

@Twenmi Over the last two years, Berkeley sends out their acceptance the Friday after cal day at around 3-5pm.

I have a question -
Applying to Economics Major
My college pre-req’d me out of Calc 1 because I had a 4 on the Calc AB test and automatically placed me into Calc II, which I passed with an A+.
However, Cal says that only a 5 on the AB test fulfills the pre-req on their transfer website,

I know it’s kinda late lol but I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not my application would be thrown out purely on this basis…

Thanks & good luck everyone!!

Hi Everyone,

So I had enough AP credits to transfer from community college in one year, and applied as an Econ major. I finished IGETC and my prerequisites and have a 4.0. I took micro at my community college, but used my AP macro test (I scored a 4) to to fulfill the prerequisites. I was looking at Berkeley’s website today and it said "Economics Micro/Macro* - scores of 4-5 on both exams are equivalent to Economics 1 or 2.” Now I’m just worried that they won’t accept a combination of the community college class and AP credits for the Economics 1 requirement. I’ve been looking everywhere and they don’t talk about course equivalency for AP macro. I just wanted to see if anyone knows anything about this or could offer their interpretation.

I mean at this point I know that I can’t do anything about it, but I’m just so nervous.

@scholaballa 4.43 GPA?!

@WhatATimeALIVE @bk82234 IGETC will more than likely cover you for L&S, which is where Econ is. If you switch for EEP, I think my advisor said that IGETC is pretty good for that too. As always, call a peer advisor for Econ to confirm or just wait until decisions come out.

@ericbadmon I mean I realize it’s low… Thanks for being so helpful. It’s only like .08 outside the range

@scholaballa We mean, that 4.0 tends to be the max… in terms of GPA, so 4.43 is … of the charts… literally.

@scholaballa Don’t think @ericbadmon meant any harm bud. You said a 4.43 was your GPA which sounds more like a weighted HS GPA than a college but most CCs base their GPAs on a 4.0 scale. Hence the confusion

@scholaballa I think you made a typo, did you mean to write 3.43 was your GPA? Because you wrote that you had a 4.43 GPA, which is impossible because transfer GPAs are not weighted, hence the maximum GPA anyone can have as a transfer is a 4.0.

@scholaballa yeah lol I wasn’t saying your GPA is low, if anything it’s off the chart high. I don’t think a 4.43 GPA is possible in college. I haven’t seen any student with that type of GPA, 4.0 is the max b/c it’s unweighted

@ericbadmon yeah lol I meant 3.43, probably not quite as impressive but if I get all 70 units from my CC and stay another year it’ll be 3.56 if I do well. Sorry about the attitude I’m very stressed about having to wait another month

@scholaballa Hey man it’s okay I get it, we’re all stressed out right now. If it’s only .08 outside of the range, then theres stilll a chance for admission, although it is pretty low. When you say you finished all the ones you could, did you check to see if any schools nearby offer those prereqs? I ask b/c the admissions officers might check to see if there are those classes offered around your area. Even if a class isn’t articulated at your school, the committee for Cal and UCLA want to see that you tried your best to take em. If there aren’t any of them offered within a reasonable vicinity, then they’ll prob let it slide since English isn’t a capped major at Cal. Also, being in a tough situation like your’s could definitely help your case, esp if you did a good job writing about it in your PS.

@scholabella If it makes you feel better, I’m also below my GPA range for my major too, so we’re in the same boat here.

Hey guys, I heard some reports on this site that UCLA and UCB play bias to area of the student. Not for out of state vs. in-state, but that they consider nor-cal vs. so-cal. So, for example, people speculate that Berkeley might not accept a so-cal student that they assume is going to be accepted into UCLA because they think that the student is gonna reject the offer to Berkeley to stay in his/her area. How valid is this statement? Is it just street myth? I’m hoping it is lol
