2 completely different things here. The supplemental survey is for people on the edge of admission; they are looking for a reason to admit you. You really ought to fill it out.

The UC schools also randomly select applicants (10%?) to verify an EC. From what I’ve read they pick a single EC, not all of them, but you have to verify the one they ask for.

I heard in CC that if one is unable to verify an EC another EC will be picked and if the applicant still can’t verify then he or she is rescinded.

EC verification is entirely random? I’m surprised I wasn’t asked, I had a lot of stuff listed. So they’ll just take my word for it? Or have they not asked everyone yet?

I mean, I can’t exactly document the hours. I can document the positions and stuff.

It means you’re a borderline candidate and on the verge of not getting in. But the UC system understands that not every applicant has the same opportunities. So they send you a questionnaire asking about factors that might explain why your app is weak. Maybe you don’t have many honors or AP classes; they ask how many were offered at your school? Maybe you don’t have a lot of ECs; they ask did you have to work a job to help your family? Etc.

We aren’t allowed to give links to blogs, but there is an admission counselor named Mr. Sun that offers by email a free set of guidelines on how to answer the supplement questions (he also has a paid service to go over your answers). You can find a link to his site with a google search.

Note the supplement is completely different from EC verification. For the latter the UC system randomly selects 10% of the apps and requires the person to verify an EC of the UC’s choosing. They won’t forward your app onto your selected UC campuses until you do so to their satisfaction. Being selected for this is entirely a matter of chance and has nothing to do with being a weak or strong candidate.

My take is different than mikemac’s. Yes, you are on the bubble when you are sent a supplemental, but they are looking for reasons to admit you. (If they wanted to reject you they would have.) Thus, it’s time to highlight the stuff that UC loves: overcoming adversity.

My take is also different. A few years ago UC decided they were seeing a lot of lies. They decided to open an office to verify questionable claims.
