So i'm just wondering how this works..because my family makes under 80k and on my financial aid page I got an 8k grant, but nothing mentioned about Blue & Gold. While my friend's page shows a 4k grant and that he's eligible for Blue & Gold. How can that be possible?

they might change it later. i wasn’t given mine until after fall quarter had begun.

How much of the tuition are you expected to pay? Please note that tuition does not include room and board. The Blue and Gold Ribbon Opportunity only affects your tuition (which for the UC’s is actually really small).

For example, I have to take out quite a lot of loans but the Blue and Gold Ribbon Opportunity covered ALL of my tuition.

Well I’m going to be living at home and the 8k grant makes it 15k per year…no blue and gold on my page whatsoever

I am also confused about this. Which income does this take into account? b.c. my parents make under $80,000 following taxes and everything, but more than that beforehand. I have Cal grant A so that’s ~12K off tuition, but that’s not the entirety of the tuition.

On the other hand, I look at my UC Davis Financial aid, and they provide an extra $2,000 scholarship, which they say is need-based, to cover the rest of the tuition cost

So lost.

Determined: Do you live in California?

@ObvSlplss: I’ll assume that YOU live in California. UC Davis’ tuition (Like all UC’s) is roughly 12k~14k per year (UC System wide fees and all). Your Cal Grant and Need based scholarship covers all of that. Your costs have been covered, so the Blue Gold doesn’t need to do more.

The rest of your payments are just “fees” and “fees” which technically don’t count as tuition.

Alright, thank you very much. xP I guess SD just has more fees/doesn’t want to cover the extra fees.

I do live in Cali. With the 8kgrant I will be paying 15 per year. Shouldn’t blue and gold cover all tuition though? I wont be dorming

@Obvslpss: They aren’t supposed to cover the extra fees. If they did, they wouldn’t make any money and go broke.

@Determined24:

That doesn’t make sense. You shouldn’t have to pay 22k (without grants) in tuition if you live instate.

You should recheck the numbers. I think you misread something.

I have a question about Blue and Gold. So my current “Gift Aid” shows this:
If I DON’T get awarded a Cal Grant, how would this change my award? Would the Blue and Gold add an additional $12,924? Would the “UCSD Grant” increase from $2,191 to $12,924? Would my TOTAL Gift Aid (Pell Grant+UCSD grant+Blue and Gold) drop to $12,924? Anyone know how it would work?

@AncientGammoner:

It really depends. As paradise mentioned, you won’t really know til later on.

Theoretically, yes, if you qualify for the Blue and Gold, if you don’t get the Cal Grant (which I’m sure you will), then they will have to offer you some other form of grant/scholarship until you have enough money to cover the tuition costs.

If I use my grants to pay off my loans, can the Blue and Gold pay for my tuition?

@Permapoop:

I believe that, as long as grant money and scholarships combined cover tuition, that’s that. Allocation isn’t something you get to pick.

Of course, those who demonstrate even greater financial need may qualify for even more aid that go beyond tuition. But you shouldn’t assume that you will get this. Just assume you’ll get enough to cover tuition.

Asterus: I mentioned different three scenarios, which one are you saying it might be? The one that concerns me is the last one where Blue and Gold eats my Pell grant and only gives me $5,233 more, so my “Total Gift Aid” covers tuition ($12,924). In that case my loans can’t cover remaining amount it’s simply too much. Can anyone who currently has Blue and Gold tell me if this is how it works?

You’re misunderstanding what blue and gold is. It’s NOT a grant. It’s NOT a scholarship.

It’s the guarantee that all the grants and scholarships will cover your tuition costs, at the very minimum. The other fees, if there isn’t any money left, will have to be covered by you, your family, or outside scholarships.

Blue and Gold does NOT take away your money. If you have any money OVER the tuition costs, they are used to cover the other fees.

I never said it took money away, I said it would eat my Pell grant by putting it towards tuition. Right now my Pell grant is giving me money on top of tuition because the “possible cal grant” is covering tuition. I’m simply wondering how much Blue and Gold will give me if I don’t get the cal grant, I don’t know how I can make it clearer. Surely someone has Blue and Gold and knows?

Grants can’t be allocated?
I thought Grants were money that is given to the individual person so that they can use it toward their school fees?

@AncientGammoner:

Again, you’re not understanding what Blue and Gold is. It’s the GUARANTEE that ALL of your state/government scholarships/grants (INCLUDING PELL GRANT) will cover tuition costs.

For now, let’s pretend that your Cal Grant is ACCEPTED. That means Blue and Gold has done its part in making sure that your tuition is covered. Nothing will happen, unless the school deems that you are eligible for MORE aid to cover the extra costs.

Then, let’s pretend that your Cal Grant is dropped. Your total gift aid will then be UNDER the amount of tuition. The Blue and Gold (If they decide to put you under this plan), will find SOME WAY to make it up to you and give you enough scholarship/grants to pay for the tuition cost.

There IS no “eating Pell Grant”. The Pell Grant is PART of the “Blue and Gold” guarantee. If you didn’t get the Cal Grant, you didn’t get it. You aren’t “entitled” to 20k Gift Aid. If you are eligible for Blue and Gold, then the minimum that the Blue and Gold has to do is to cover tuition costs.

If the school wants to give you more money because your financial need is great enough or your merit is great enough, then so be it. But anything outside of the tuition cost is NOT the responsibility of Blue and Gold.

@Permapoop: It’s not that they can’t be allocated. But the Blue and Gold is just a guarantee that your scholarships/grants will be able to cover school cost. Anything else is left to you.

If you decide to “allocate” the money to something else, that is up to you.
