@aggiemomtobe your D should be fine not being invited to join the honors program (UHP). It is great getting priority registration every quarter, taking one honors class per quarter, and building relationships with other honors students and professors. However, all students can make their own path to success by building relationships with other students, professors in your major, and going to office hours which may lead to finding out about research internships, classes, etc. About 200 incoming freshmen are invited to join UHP and live in one of the Tercero Residence Halls. We were told a UHP student may request to have a non-honors student as a roommate if there is room. UC Davis UHP website: https://honors.ucdavis.edu/

@bayarea7 We were in your position last year. S waitlisted at UCD and UCSD with 3.88 uw / 4.2ish w / 35 ACT. He was later accepted to UCSB, UCLA, and UCB. Good luck.

Rejected
Computer Science and Engineering

National Merit Commended
AP Scholar
4 years varsity track, marching band leader
Two computer science internships
Engineering job
Nanoscience Institute
Eagle Scout
Solid essays
ONE blemish: Junior year Honors precalculus Cs (pretty big deal for an engineering applicant. We were hopeful it was forgivable with the AP Calculus A and Math 800).
White male from high achieving high school. In state. ELC.
They had a legit reason to deny him. He would choose Cal Poly over UCD anyway and the college gods were merciful enough to admit him into Cal Poly before this rejection so no complaints.

Does anyone know the weight of UC Davis and their animal science program? Do they look at essays/service just as much as gpa and sat?

I feel weird being accepted to it despite my average/bordering low GPA and test scores and the fact that I am out of state. I only had a 3.5 (uw) GPA and 1290 SAT with 5,5,6 on the writing portion. Does it seem likely that my essays played a big part of being accepted?

@Galile0 Likely a combo of that plus being OOS. I’m in the same boat (3.87 uw, 1310), and if you had really good essays, the fact that you would be paying about 25k extra per year probably helped a bit.

@Galile0: Being a full pay OOS applicant gives you an advantage but below is how UCD reviews applicants:

  • DAVIS

  • Very important: Academic GPA, Application essay, Rigor of secondary school record, Standardized test scores
  • Important: Character/personal qualities, Extracurricular activities, Talent/ability, Volunteer work
  • Considered: First generation college student, Geographical residence, State residency, Work experience
  • Note: Scholastic achievement most important, followed by school and community activities, academic interests, special circumstances, special achievements and awards Admission decisions are made based upon the qualifications of the applicant pool and the number of available spaces within each academic area: • College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences admits by college • College of Biological Sciences admits by college • College of Letters and Science admits by division within the college • (Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies; Mathematics and Physical Sciences; Social Sciences) • College of Engineering admits by academic department Students applying as "undeclared" or "undeclared/exploratory" are considered within the college/division to which they applied.

My daughter was accepted.

@Luna2499 This is what is wrong with admissions - you are better than UCD, on paper.

@kachuang You did nothing wrong - UCD admissions are clueless half the time.

Mechanical Engineering

Weighted GPA: 4.5 / 1550 SAT / 35 ACT

Thought I had solid essays as well, getting flat out rejected was a bummer :frowning:

@ggbears I know several students with stellar stats like you who got rejected from Davis. They are a “yield” focused school–they want those they admit to go there so with your stats they feel you will be going elsewhere to a better school. That’s actually a compliment! Did you apply to UCLA or UCB? You will probably be admitted there! Good luck! You deserve it.
