UC Davis Fall 2016 Transfer Thread

i will definitely be without a meal plan.

to all of those who filed off-campus housing

How much is your budgeted amount for housing?
Does the projected aid cover normal rent?

I’m looking around online and housing can go as cheap as 600/month. I’m tempted to switch to off-campus housing even if it lowers my aid. I don’t want to be living in a complex of partying 20yr olds all year

Has anyone sir’d?

does anyone know how we find out if we qualified for the EOP program

Has anyone received a scholarship on their fin. app?

Incase anyone was still confused I guess you can receive call and the university grant. But it will absorb the cost of what you don’t expect to pay. check it out http://financialaid.ucdavis.edu/undergraduate/types/need.html

I need to call and ask if I was correct in putting on-campus housing if I plan on living in family housing (solano park) because they have a waitlist and a spot isn’t guaranteed. I think the cost of attendance for off-campus students is estimated to be about $5K cheaper so I imagine aid would go down quite a bit.

Cal Grant is federal aid and University grant is distr. by Davis so they’re definitely different and all students who are eligible get a combination of both.

@TransferJ on my admissions portal I saw some stuff about EOP as I scrolled down

mine doesnt seem to have it but I am low income and first gen:(

Call them? When I went to Davis last semester for STEM Transfer Day I signed up for it p sure.

Here is a link to apply: http://success.ucdavis.edu/programs/eop/apply.html

@ananguiano Does your package include Cal Grant along with the other grants? Mine only has Pell Grant, University Campus Fee Grant and University Grant.

Hey guys I need your input. I know it depends on my financial need but I got 27k in financial aid and I’m afraid it won’t cover it all but would it be better to risk reducing some aid by renting out an off-campus apartments or to go through SHA without a meal plan because I DON’T think I want a meal plan because it’s super expensive. If I chose the SHA without meal plan would it make a difference somehow in terms of not having to borrow loans? I know we all have to get student loans at some point.

@vhu2016

I’m in the same predicament. I was googling and reading about people’s aid getting reduced by like 8k when they switched from on to off-campus housing. I’m not sure but I used that as just a ballpark estimate.

The financial aid page says I’ll have to take out a 5k loan for 16-17 but the meal plan itself adds up to about 5k then consider the fact that you most likely will not end up paying the 1.6k that they quote for “books”. Especially if you rent, buy used or download them from amazon and the like. So essentially that 5k loan could be unnecessary

So we /might/ be able to get by without taking out a loan, especially if you can get a PT job. Which I plan on doing, I tutor at my CC so I’m going to look for other tutoring jobs or at least a coffee house job idk

I don’t know if I have this all wrong but this is how I was thinking about it last night. I want to go through SHA because I don’t think I’ll be able to afford flying or driving 9 hours to davis and staying long enough before fall quarter to go apartment hunting and I’d like to live on campus especially is the aid is paying for it.

@bolognese yeah I’m planning to do that as well. I want to reduce drawing out my loans as much as possible but when it comes to that then yeah I would have to draw out loans. I suppose going through SHA would save the trouble of having to look for an apartment off-campus and finding roommates. I put myself under work study on my fafsa so hopefully I could find a job somewhere on campus and that would probably help reduce some of my financial anxieties a bit. But yeah you are right. I would hope that financial aid would help cover some of the cost of the apartments.

I am kinda bummed about my quote. My parents make less then 30 thousand and they expect me to pay 8,500:(

Does anyone know if cal grants and the middle class scholarship are part of the initial financial aid offering? I qualified for the blue and gold program but only have that and loans listed.

@ananguiano do you have children? i hope to live at Solano Park also, i have children.

@napapapa I put off-campus on my FAFSA but may actually switch to on campus housing depending on what’s available. I plan on deciding after I visit on the 13th. I figured I could use that weekend to scope out neighborhoods and get a better feel for Davis and Sacramento.

@bolognese I budgeted 12K a year for housing and food (~$700 rent and ~$300 food). UCD budgeted ~$10K, so it is a touch lower. It worked out to be $815 a month for rent and food but totally workable. This is with all grants, btw, not including scholarships or loans as of yet. I think they’re being really generous.

I am concerned about conditions for admissions. Do we need to get above B’s for all classes?
