@willowstil Why would we have to do them to begin with?
For other schools, if they do read them. Since the UC application goes to whatever schools you pick.
@hailey111 I second what @ilovemydog2019 said. 5 of the 9 schools do read the essays: UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCI, and UCM. The list is on page 43 of the document if you want the source.

@willowstil
For me, it’s really disappointing. We all put our heart souls into our essays, and writing was a huge benefit for me to express my choice of major. I couldn’t fit enough credits for recommended classes for both UCD and UCSC besides IGETC. My essays really reflect my strengths and abilities for my specific majors that aren’t expressed through my transcript or even ECs. If I don’t get in to either of these schools, I think this would be a big factor that hurt me.
@fullogiggles i agree completely. I was honestly surprised to see UCD as one of the few that didn’t read the essays since other schools have a lot more applicants and I would understand if THEY were the ones who didn’t take them into consideration because of the time frame. However, all schools should read them. We work so hard on trying depict ourself in the best way possible and tell our story in just a couple hundred words. Stats aren’t the only thing that matter. I guess we’ll see the verdict in two days
do we find out if we get regents with the acceptance letter? Or do we find out on a later date?
@mjyoung I asked the scholarship office last week and they told me the regents notification will be with our admissions letter. If there’s nothing about regents on your acceptance letter then you didn’t get it.
^^ thanks! appreciate you calling haha
I see that it states that all schools use our essays for “scholarship purposes” or “academic gaps”. To me academic gaps seems pretty vague because there is a separate question regarding this on app which is not considered a personal insight question. This is obviously just guessing, but perhaps those schools at the very least skim them and use the questions for borderline applicants?
After reading this, I do think there is a vary slim chance they would read our essays. But I’m fighting with several ideas, if you only applied to the schools that don’t read the essays why would it even be an option on the application? Seems like a stretch to go through all of that work for just scholarships and academic gaps, especially when there aren’t a ton of scholarships to go out. In addition to scholarships, Davis has a separate Regents application. So how would these essays apply to them at all, when it says all UC’s use them for some purpose?
I know I’m babbling, and I don’t know how clear I am with these thoughts, but I’m just sad/confused that it would work like that. I felt like my essays really set me apart from the crowd on the topics and ways I addressed them, it makes me feel like my safety options aren’t so safe anymore.
is it weird that we all are pretty certain decisions are coming out on the 19th but that Davis hasn’t actually posted that date. our portals still say late April and nothing more specific…
Kinda not really. It was said a UCD rep stated that decisions would come out this Friday.
My sister said at her CCC the other day the Davis rep said the 19th.
I heard Davis is insanely competitive this year according to an admissions rep. Apparently they got more applicants than ever. Good luck to everyone who doesn’t have above a 3.8+. Stay cool there guys I’m at a 3.35ish so pretty much no hope even with an easy major (Econ). Whatever though, it’s life!
@Suckinluv12 Why do you say 3.8 or higher? UCD isn’t as competitive as UCLA or UCB where I would expect to see that gpa
@willowstil @animalscience1 @fullogiggles Now I understand why I was wait-listed at UC Davis and accepted to UCLA and UC Berkeley last year. ?
UCD’s admit GPA range last year was 3.35 - 3.81. Btw, the admit rate for Economics was 70% for Fall 2018, according to https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major
@Suckinluv12 Geeze… you would think if they are getting more competitive for apps they would READ our essays to narrow it down. Also don’t lose all hope!! It’s a possibility for you.
I have heard from incoming freshmen that I know, that it was ultra competitive this year. For example, a really qualified girl I know had a 4.3 GPA, great essays, and solid ECs but was waitlisted or rejected to every UC… I know it’s easier for us to get in though.
@cloud7 To be honest, the thought crossed my mind that my chances could be higher for a place like UCB because of my essays! But honestly, who knows at this point? My brain keeps flip flopping over what schools (if any at this point tbh) I even stand a chance at.
UCD replied to someone on Insta saying that decisions will be released “soon”. Hope that means Friday!
Oh wait maybe I actually have a good chance then if the admit rate was 70%. I have around a 3.3ish with all the major classes and prerequisites for the major done by spring all my other courses are A’s and B’s. It was one non-major class that I performed poorly in.
@fullogiggles I know what you mean! That’s how I felt last year when I was waiting. (I’m still waiting for most UCs but I’m pretty sure I’m going to go to a CSU and I’ve gotten into the ones I applied to.) I feel like it’s a lottery where they put all the students who are qualified into a hat and then pull them out randomly, ha. Anyway, I wish you and everyone else who applied to Davis luck! It’s a great school and the students seem very down-to-earth.
