Is it true that UCD smells like cow poop? Especially when it rains?

It’s a legitimate question. One area of the campus has a distinct cow smell. I believe the source is direction west of the Tercero dorms, so you have a general idea of which parts smell like cow.

I’ve been to Davis dozens of times in all kinds of weather and all I ever smell are flowers and trees. It is a gorgeous campus set in a bucolic community. FYI my son lives in Tercero.

As any rancher will tell you, that’s the smell of money, honey. =)

when I visited on Saturday for decision UC Davis, I didn’t smell the cows anywhere except for a little around tercero, even then it was gone after a couple minutes.

I grew up in Davis and lived there 20 years and still visit. I absolutely LOVE the town and campus.

When the wind blows a certain way (maybe from the west??) you can smell the cow barns and for me the smell always meant summer because I could often smell it while hanging out at the rec. pool.

It wasn’t terrible. It was just there sometimes. Now I kinda miss it! : )

It seems like it was worst in warm weather, on hot dry days.

But it was really a minor thing.

Never smelled/seen a cow here, except for like once and that was when we went to go look at them. In summer you probably can, though.

dmission you also live in Tercero, right?

collegemom- Yeah, I’m just sharing the info. that I’ve “heard” about of UC Davis.

What’s so bad about that?

Thanks to other CC members, I now know that Davis doesn’t smell that bad.

Sheesh.

And we know right where you are coming from. ;)

FYI I’ve “heard” (from my d who made 3 visits) that UCSD is the most socially dead of all the UC’s… that it is a commuter campus due to the very high cost of trying to find an apartment anywhere near the campus… that most kids live 20 minutes away after freshman year and the campus is beyond dead on weekends… that the students at UCD are much nicer and more chill… that UCD has a much prettier campus… but I guess UCSD must not be that bad.

Sheesh.

Yeah your daughter is right- I heard that UCSD is the most socially dead as well. But I wouldn’t know since I don’t go there. And I don’t think the campus is that great either; however, the area around UCSD is pretty nice.

: )

Is anyone sick of these “I’ve heard…” posts on College Confidential? It’s like every weak you see “I’ve heard Davis is boring” or “I’ve heard SB is filled with STDs?”. Maybe I’ll just start responding “I’ve heard you’re a ■■■■■”.

Also, why can’t you just visit the campus?

I was just wondering if it did smell :P

I can’t really visit because I live sort of far away… and I’m not going to UCD this fall.
Wish I could visit, though.

The point of having a forum like college confidential is to ask questions such as “I’ve heard…” Yeah these questions might be stupid to people as enlightened as some of you think you are, but how else are prospective students supposed to get this information?

I myself have raised cattle for about the last decade so yeah I can’t help but rolling my eyes a little when people are like “EWWW COW POOP SMELL YUCK” because honestly I don’t even smell it much anymore, but most kids have never been around a cow and I really think it’s unfair to judge them for their curiosity.

Also, the thread you quoted collegemom really didn’t seem like he was tr0lling he was just expressing what he had “heard,” LUCKILY had that person has a forum at their disposal to come ask these questions no matter how inane you find them.

And asking someone “why can’t you just visit,” isn’t really that fair, I live 8 hours away from Davis and I am supposed to make the drive up there just to see if it smells like cows, gee I sure wish there was a place where I could ask these questions. Please, imagine me rolling my eyes right now.

Now, I would get it if the thread were entitled UC DAVIS SMELLS!!!ONETWO!!, but really it was phrased as a question, and we should all grow up, and I would hope that our society was in a place where college moms didn’t feel the need to pick on prospective younger students.

P.S., I live around San Diego (I was even at Sea World yesterday ) and it is not socially dead, it’s what you make it, as canned of an answer as that seems, it’s the truth. You might have to make more of an effort to find those things than say at UCLA but they are there, trust me.

In the thread I quoted he/she was extolling the virtues of UCSD. It is quite apparent what he/she was doing. No one is being picked on, just being issued a friendly reminder that we can all draw inferences and read. ;)

You should visit the colleges you are seriously considering attending for a multitude of reasons. A primary one would be to make sure you are joining an enjoyable college community. Of course you should not make a long trip just to check out a silly rumor you supposedly heard, but then you don’t need me to tell you that. :)

I didn’t mean to “extol” the virtues of UCSD… I don’t care much for that school since I don’t even go there… but if that’s what you thought I was doing, then all right.

As a current student dorming at Tercero, I can honestly say the cow smell is a truth. But it is rarely occuring and most of the time you don’t notice. This is of course my experience up till this spring quarter, I have no idea how things are when it becomes hotter but I can tell you that Fall-Early Spring quarter (at the moment) it is not botherable at all, so don’t worry about :)

I’m in tercero, only smelled them once.

To the OP: no, not really. it’s fine, come visit. don’t base anything off of what you “hear”

I’m up in Cuarto and on some days you can smell them near the sycamore intersection (might be the horse smell too). But it’s really not a problem and is gone in a minute.

I got accepted today, so I’m looking forward to the smell, xD
