UC Davis vs UC San Diego for Econ

I'm currently debating on whether I should go to UCD or UCSD for economics. I'm more focused on the microeconomic and business concepts so I would actually be majoring in Managerial Economics at UCD or Management Science at UCSD.

I know that UCD and UCSD are pretty much the same ranking wise (although UCD's ranking is rising while UCSD's ranking seems to be falling), so I want to know which school has the better economics program.

I heard UCD Managerial Economics program has high prestige and the recruitment is strong, but I never hear anything about UCSD's UNDERGRADUATE economics program or its management science program.

So what do you guys think?

You keep mentioning UC San Diego losing its prestige. Nothing suggests UCSD is “falling”.

Managerial Economics is definitely a more popular program but it’s not Haas or UCLA biz econ. It’s not recruited by any MBB or bulge brackets unless it’s for commercial banking positions. It’s geared towards management consulting(despite no MBB recruiting) and corporate finance. Companies like Apple, Intel, Target recruit for corp. finance or marketing positions.

UCSD Economics/Man. sci is more broad in the sense that you can choose to go into accounting, corp. finance, investment banking, consulting, commercial banking etc. Investment banking recruiting is not very strong. Off the top of my head, UBS recruits(or recruited?) there and some regional firms. UCSD students usually head up to UCLA for info sessions. It’s gained popularity only recently which is why there’s not a lot of information.

Since you seemed to be concerned with prestige and ranking, UCSD Econ is considered more prestigious. Since econ programs are usually only ranked at the graduate level, you’ll find UCSD hanging around UCLA while UC Davis is a little lower. I don’t know how the graduate rankings impact the undergraduate programs.

UCSD’s Econ/management science is nothing compared to Haas or BizEcon either. That is why I’m trying to compare strictly Davis’s undergraduate econ program to UCSD undergraduate econ program.

If there isn’t much info on their managerial/management econ programs and the undergraduate level (I could really care less about their graduate ranking because graduate professors are not going to be teaching at the undergrad level, and I’d rather go somewhere else for grad school), I think I would choose Davis over San Diego just because I feel like Davis is getting lots of prestige these days and has the better college experience.

^^ The graduate rankings are based on the professor and their field of research as well as the “quality” of students the graduate program attracts. Undergrad program recognition usually benefits from their graduate ranking status.

Most professors instruct undergrads and grad students. You may or may not have a class instructed by a “graduate” professor. Some graduate courses will cross-list with undergrad upper division courses, but you will not be taking graduate level classes.

Don’t get hung up on how prestigous a school is, but rather focus on the college experience. 10-years from now, your work experience will say a lot more about you than the school name on your diploma (though it’s a nice bonus xD).

It sounds like you’re pushing some kind of personal agenda here (UCD > UCSD). Did you even apply to UCSD? You claim there isn’t much info on UCSD but keep saying “heard” and “feel” in regards to UC Davis.

UCSD econ is much more comparable to UCLA econ than UC Davis econ. UC Davis is usually compared to UCSB(not a knock against UCSB at all).

And before there is any accusation of bias or whatever, I tagged to UC Davis Managerial Economics and will almost certainly end up at Davis for Fall 2013.

how good is ucsb for econ+accounting?

@Wassupman99 After going through your post, I fell that davis is the university that suits you because you give much credit to Davis over SD.

UCSD is a much better school than UCD in everything except Agriculture major. SDs Economics programs is way better than UCDs. actually you cannot even compare that two.I’d say UCLAs Econ program is a good competitor to UCSDs. Ranking wise SDs program rank under 20th.

You should also consider which university you like the most. If you are looking for a place to just do your studies, I’d suggest Davis because there is nothing to do, no where to go and you are almost dead!!!
but if you want to have a life while studying go for UCSD.

UCSD Econometrics is one of the best in the country and their other programs are very well ranked. You’re right that rankings are based on grad programs, but the talent those grad programs attract in regards to professors and grad students has a direct impact on the undergraduate program.

UCSD is measurably better than UCD for Econ. Not a knock on UCD at all, great school, and the town is a fun place to party; but UCSD Econ is simply better.

You obviously sound like you feel Davis is a better fit for you but are conflicted because UCSD Econ is better. Because of this, it seems you’re trying to convince yourself (and others) that UCD Econ is on par with UCSD Econ. I have friends in both departments, it’s not.
