UC Davis Young Scholars Program (YSP) 2013

@WishUponThisStar Ugh. Now I feel lazy for answering it the other way. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, I had my Dad call Mr. Pomeroy about it and he said that I could, but then I was able to contact my teacher (using my fabulous stalker techniques) and get the confirmation email, so I mailed it in anyway.

Hmm well my school is open on Easter Monday…don’t know about Davis though. :confused: But the website said after I submitted my application online that they were going to start reviewing applications on Tuesday sooo I think we should be okay…?

And if I recall correctly, the application is due by April 1st - not postmarked by April 1st - am I correct?

I do believe that it had to be in their hands by April 1st, but I’d go check their website to be sure.

@Yellersam @katcampagna Correct. Everything, both the online application and the mail-in portion are due by April 1st, which was yesterday. For me, USPS stated that UC Davis received my application yesterday.

Now comes the long wait… ughhh

Have any of you guys received your postcard back. I got my delivery confirmation, but I was just wondering if I should be worried about not receiving the postcard?

@magnificent6 I have not. I’m sure it’ll take some time for them to send it back. Since you just got your confirmation and I got that yesterday, I don’t think we will receive it this soon.

I haven’t received my postcard, a little paranoid. Fingers crossed and hope for the best? Any idea as to how many (qualified) applicants there were this year?

@katcampagna Ahhh, same here! Last year there were a couple hundred applicants, and they said that there would be even more this year, so everything is just making me nervous to a very great extent.

@WishUponThisStar did you apply to any other camps? I live in the Bay Area, so Stanford and Cal are in the neighboorhood, Davis being about 2 hours away. This is my first choice by a longshot though!

@katcampagna I live all the way on the east coast in New York, so I’m applying to a bunch of camps in my area on the most part. But YSP is definitely, without a doubt, my first choice as well, so here’s hoping for good results.

Are there any other camps in California that you think would be worthwhile for an out-of-state person to apply to?

@WishUponThisStar I applied to COSMOS at UC San Diego. It’s concentrated on biodiesels, which I find mildly interesting. Really just interested in 4 weeks in San Diego. The UCSD campus is out of this world.

I used to live in upstate New York! In Rochester, actually!

@katcampagna I wish I knew about COSMOS earlier because by the time I found out about it, the deadline had already passed. Looks like a great program though, maybe I’ll apply next year.

And wow! I used to live in Rochester as well!! We ended up moving closer to the city though.

@WishUponThisStar Small world, yeah?

If (fingers crossed!) you were to get in, what do you think you would research?

@katcampagna Definitely!

Fingers and toes for me. I am not completely sure yet, but I know that I will want to do something anatomically related, hopefully something with the Neurology, Physiology and Behavior department. All I can say right now is that something about humans is what I’d like to do it on. I’m not really interested in plant biology.

What about you?

@WishUponThisStar

I am more interested in alternative energy sources. I’ve done some work with solar energy, so more of that may be nice. But i’m still up in the air and very well may end up making fuel out of dirt and worms. All I know is that I’ll be a master at organic nomenclature by the end of the summer!

@katcampagna I think you’ve definitely good a well-organized plan for what you’re going to do. Just out of curiosity, is that what you’re look to major in in college?

@WishUponThisStar

It most certainly is. Major in enrivornmental/alternative energy engineering and minor in public policy. What about you?

@katcampagna I am almost completely sure that I am going to that the pre-med route, so therefore, I will probably major in biology. That field really interests me so hopefully I’ll be able to do some research, and some hands-on work to get a better scope on everything. So hopefully we will hear some positive news from Davis.

All you can do is hope now! And isn’t it almost 2 am in NY?!

@katcampagna Hahaha, yes it is. I’m going to finish up this research paper for English in about 5 minutes and then go to bed. I wish that we did this research paper a little earlier because I’m sure it would have made for a better writing sample for YSP than what I submitted.
