UC - Fail prerequisite before transfer

Hi everyone,

I applied to transfer to a UC this fall for Business and Economics (depending on the schools) and currently have a 3.79 GPA. I had all the prereqs for all of my majors done except for two that I would finish in the Spring (now): Managerial Accounting and Calculus II. Managerial Accounting is going fine and I have an “A”, but I am seriously struggling in Calculus II, and it will take a miracle for me to pass but it is still possible. If I don’t pass, I’ll still have my prereqs done for UC Davis as they do not require Calc II, but UCLA, UCI, and UCSB do. Will my applications be rescinded automatically or is there anything at all that I can do in the event I have to drop or fail the class (based on of I actually get into the schools of course) to still be able to go to the schools? I know UCLA is really strict on that but I was still wondering.

Thanks

I don’t think anything is “automatic”, they will review your admission and keep you in suspense until they decide. Note that if you drop the class you are required to notify them if it happens prior to receiving the decision.

Also you might want to check with Davis regarding what they will do. It may be true that it is not a prereq but another clause of their admission offer is that you satisfactorily complete all the classes you listed that you were taking when you applied and updated your app. Davis has rescinded people for dropping or failing a class before they transferred, as a search on the forum will show. No guarantee they will, but it has happened.

The thing is, the drop deadline is April 12 which is after the deadline for any final TAUs (March 30). My second calc test is next Wednesday so I’ll know more about my standing in the class after. If I do decide to drop, do you recommend before the TAU deadline or before the school’s drop deadline? Thanks again.

I’d be more concerned about failing the class than the missing pre-req. if your major is impacted at any of the schools, you’ll probably get hurt by not having it but I’d rather have a W then a fail.

I’d drop before TAU deadline if you must.

I would not drop. Do everything under your power to get a C. Here is the issue: The Davis req for the major is complete as many as possible. That’s vague. So, the TAG committee has a ton of leeway as to how they interpret that. And, as mikemac said, Davis is notorious for denying TAGs. Since Calc 2 is required elsewhere, I put more odds on your losing that battle rather than winning. And since you’re out at the other UCs, you have no fallback. As a positive, you get lower than a C, you can retake, get an A and apply next year and be eligible for all the UCs.

Calc II is not a prerequisite for my major at UC Davis though. I’ll have all prerequisite and IGETC done for UC Davis for sure, but I’ll have Calc II dropped. I didn’t TAG to Davis BTW.

If I end up going farther down in grades (I’ll find out more after my next test next week), should I drop before the UC TAU deadline or before my CCC drop deadline?

I thought calc II is a recommended prereq at UCD for man. econ?

No on ASSIST it’s just Calc I but Calc II is also accepted if taken with Calc II. Maybe they changed the prereqs this year because I didn’t TAG to Davis because I thought I needed Calc II which was needed by Fall 2017 to TAG.

If you decide to withdraw or end up not passing Calculus II, it’s pretty much a guarantee that UCLA and UCSB won’t accept you, since these are the UCs which are very strict about pre-reqs (especially at UCLA since Business Econ and Econ are two of the most competetive and impacted majors with thousands of transfer applicants each year who have stellar academic records). Of course, nothing is “automatic,” you will have to contact the individual UCs and they will review your case and make the decision, but realistically it’s not looking too good. I don’t know about UC Davis but to me it seems like if its not one of their required prereq classes for the major, you might get away with withdrawing from Calc II instead of risking an F or a D which will stay on your permanent record forever. If I was in your situation I would drop the class and take the W if there really was no hope of passing the class. If none of the UCs accept you, you can simply reapply next year after retaking Calculus II. If you are planning to drop, try to do it before the TAU deadline so you can at least update the TAU. Good luck.

I’m not sure where you’re seeing Calc 1 is required and Calc 2 isn’t. All I see is complete as many as possible. I still agree with mikemac. It’s a risk, but I guess either way is a risk.

You can see in the math section that it says MATH 30 or MATH 31 or MATH 30 & 31. I’d like to think that any choice of the three is acceptable to fufill the prereq.

^^^ aerospace science? You said business, econ or managerial econ.

Weird. On my end it’s Economics. Regardless, that’s what it says. MATH 31 doesn’t have to be taken but is accepted if taken separately or with MATH 30.

@christianoh98 On my end, it definitely is not saying what you’re seeing. I think you’re misreading the last line.

You need I and II regardless of which of the two options you choose. There is no OR between 21A and 21B. This is Econ at UCD (from College of San Mateo). It simply means the 252 course at CSM does not cover everything in 21B. Parts of 251 are needed, if not yet taken. Now I don’t know what CCC you’re at, but it probably is similar. The top line on assist says complete as many as possible. Just sayin’, you don’t know what they’re going to do.

MATH 16A Short Calculus —> MATH 241

MATH 16B Short Calculus —> MATH 242

OR

MATH 21A Calculus —> MATH 251

MATH 21B Calculus —> MATH 251 & MATH 252

Without a doubt it could work out. Davis is giving more leeway than the other UCs. I’m showing this so you can make a clear decision based on the facts, rather than thinking they are saying Calc 2 has been omitted from the equation and you have a pass. You should call Davis, but they probably will be non-committal. They aren’t going to make promises before the fact, I assume.

FWIW, I know someone who got into Davis econ a year ago with a 3.45 GPA. I don’t know what courses were completed.

Strange. Your link also leads to Aerospace Engineering for UC Davis. I think the best bet would be to just contact each school. I have a 3.79 but I don’t think it really matters if I don’t have all the classes they require. Thanks for all the help. Much appreciated.

I wish you the best of luck. I get it. Tough spot to be in.

we’re still only half way into the semester… while I’m obviously not in your class I’m sure there’s a way for you to pass. Articulate to your teacher about this issue, tell him/her your transfer is on the line…You’d be surprised at what teachers might be willing to do for you. Still, I believe if it’s a prereq your provisions are gonna require you to get at least a B in all prereqs. Tho I’m not completely sure about that, you should call some of the campuses to see. I just know there’s this guy on CC that got his acceptance rescinded from Berkeley cuz he got a C in a physics class that he had to get a B in.

My grade is really, really bad though. The highest I can get right now is a low B and that’s if I get 100% on every single assignment in the future. To pass, I have to get like 90s on the tests/final. I’m trying to get tutoring for my next test next week but things aren’t looking too good. I’ll try to talk to my teacher but I heard he’s pretty stringy on stuff like that.
