Is that true? I mean, my school GPA appears on my transcript but UC's calculate it their own way. Which way is more important?

If you mean for the UCs, then I'm pretty sure they recalculate so they can use theirs and not your school's.

UCs calc it their own way...every time I think I have it remembered correctly someone corrects me on this site. That said, which way is more important depends. Are you only applying to UCs? If so, the UC way is more important. The UC app has you fill in every class you have taken since 9th grade, even 8th if you took algebra or language in 7th or 8th...then they have you put in your grade, then they figure out your GPA. Class rank is important for UCs. If you are in CA and are in the top 4% you fall under ELC, meaning you are guaranteed admission to at least one UC, but not necessarily the one you want. Suggest you go to one of the UC forums to read more

The UC gpa is way more important only for the UCs. I had a 3.9 UC gpa and a 4.2 regular gpa so theres a large difference atleast for me.

UC's do NOT consider class rank

So for UC's sake, school GPA is worthless. What about when I apply for grants and scholarships from UC's?

8888888:

you are correct in that class rank is not used in regular admissions. However, it is used for calculating Eligibility in the Local Context, i.e., top 4% per HS. Of course, the UC system does not use the gpa on the HS transcript; rather, they recalculate it and rank the students themselves.

Don't forget, UC gpa is Soph and Jr years only, with 8 bonus points for UC-approved honors/AP/IB courses. ELC is calculated with no cap on bonus points.

fyi - less than 50% of Calif public high schools rank.

Anyone???????

UC gpa is much more important, since it excludes non a-g classes.

Alright Thanks!

The UC GPA is definitely worth more than the high school weighted GPA... The intention of the UC GPA is to see through the grade-inflation at some California public high schools where a 4.00 weighted GPA is merely average.
