UC GPA

Hi,

When UC’s talk about average GPA’s and what not are they talking about in terms of Weighted GPA?

If so I have a 3.5 weighted GPA and my top UC schools are:
-UCSB
-UCI
-UCSC
-UCD

Chances?

Other:
-I’ve been taking all the AP classes we are capable of
-URM (Colombian)
-First generation
-GPA was not as good as I wish it was: I got A’s and 2 B’s sophomore year - family member diagnosed with cancer
-Want to major in Computer Science (I code in Swift/Objective-C - iOS Apps, Mac OS X Apps, Javascript, Python, Ruby, HTML & CSS, and learning Java)

  • have family who attended UCD and UCSC
  • I have a job

UC’s will look at your unweighted GPA, your UC GPA (capped- meaning using only 8 Semesters of UC approved AP and Honors classes) and UC GPA (Uncapped-using unlimited semesters of UC approved AP and Honors courses: mainly UCB/UCLA)
UC’s only use 10-11th grades for a-g courses. Freshman and Senior grades are not included but will be looked to determine if you meet the a-g course criteria and provisional admission criteria.

Here is the UC calculator for capped: http://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

Here is the website to check your a-g courses: https://hs-articulation.ucop.edu/agcourselist#/list/search/all

Although GPA is a huge factor in admissions, you also need competitive SAT/ACT scores, interesting EC’s and good essays.
UC’s also do not take ethnicity into consideration for admission, so being a URM will notl help you.

@gumbymom Oh ok I understand now! :slight_smile:

So my GPA weighted is a 3.5 and my unweighted GPA is a 3.2, with those gpa’s and the other things listed above (SAT/ACT Scores not available yet) what are my chances into UCSB, UCI, UCSC, UCD, Santa Clara University, San Jose State, CSU LA, CSULB, and CSU monterey?

Impossible to chance without test scores. With current GPA, you need a minimum of 2000+ SAT or 30+ ACT for decent chances for the UC’s and SJSU. The rest of the Cal States, a SAT of 1600/ACT of 25 should be fine. Come back when you have your scores. What was your PSAT score?

OP - Are you a CA resident? Would you qualify for admission to a UC under their “local context” policy? They are prohibited from considering race or ethnicity in admissions, but they will consider students who are in the top 10% of their high school class, in order to bring in more disadvantaged students.

@woogzmama Yes I am a California resident :slight_smile:
