No its harder, last year the freshmen admisson rate for uci was 35.4 and uc davis was 40.6 and ucsb was 36.1. With 88,000 applicants now ill expect it to go down to about 30 to 32% this year. UCI will be a top school competitive with ucsd in a few years. Also they like higher gpa as opposed to test scores. I talk to an admisson consuler when she came to my school. She said this was because, “tests show only one aspect of who u are as oppsed to ur weighted gpa because it affects ur work ethic” she also said anyone could get a high score on just one test but gpa shows how much u are willing to work. they would much rather have a person who could do well consistently over their college life rather than a person who does well on one test of specificity.
I got that letter and email also. Don’t really know if it meant anything, all it said was thanks for applying blah blah blah video blah blah blah
@ItsHydro I only heard someone from my school got accepted last year with a 1300+SAT but 4.0 GPA, it seems
they focus on gpa more than test scores
But I also heard of people getting in with 3.6-3.8 w gpa…in the end UCI is just as hollistic as any UC, and its the competitive majors that bring up the stats of freshman admits
i wonder is software engineering an extremely competitive major??
it’s not under the engineering college but still an “engineering”
No.
Computer Science is the more ‘popular’ choice because kids are applying for it just for the money but they don’t even know any basic programming paradigms, which is really sad.
Software Engineering is the less popular one but I think it’s better.
Computer Science majors code until it works, but Software Engineer majors code until it can’t be coded anymore.
And, if you want a job at Google, your job will most likely be a Jr. Software Engineer (after your internship of course), so it’s a good choice of major.
That gives me hope. I applied to Software Engineering as my first major, and thought that it was very competitive because of the “Engineering.”
Lol wow didn’t know there were separate comp sci and SE majors at UCI.
@ItsHydro Thnak you~ But I’m still afraid of that i’ll get rejected because it’s engineering…and my stats are not competitive enough :((
Well the personal statements can make or break you in the end and so can ur extracurricular activities. If u have some good stuff in both and have better than average stats in either the tests or gpa, it will most definitely help u. I doubt they would wait and save the rejects for last. Alot of my friends who are in the top 10 with 2000 SATs and 4.5 gpas didnt hear anything back either so i dont think its something to fret about.
@ItsHydro Why are you making assumptions about kids in comp sci though? I mean it’s not a requirement to have experience in your major before entering college. Perhaps they just have an interest in technology and the idea of creating things with it.
@awesomekid That’s good, but doing it for the money is going to make them super frustrated. You really need to have an affinity for coding. But of course, it doesn’t happen to all and they do well.
@ItsHydro True, I just meant like how can you assume they’re doing it for the money if there’s that interest. And I don’t think you need to LOVE coding itself to enjoy comp sci, as much of it is more about problem solving, math, logic. Coding’s kinda like the vehicle with which you employ the logic, so they’d at least have to be fine with it.
Lol i doubt many people had previous experience with the major they applied for…its an intrest.
Ok.
does anyone have any updates?
Waiting so long has us arguing about majors and careers!!! Irvine has us too heated waiting for decisions. They really need to bring them out tomorrow to get some peace in our hearts.
I’m freaking out… Rejected to sd sb and davis, sc waitlisted but thing is sc waistlisted 7000 students which is too much, I really need uci it’s my dream school and ucr still hasn’t gotten back yet
Well, one thing that’s annoying me is the fact that the system logs me out every time I go back to check for an update.
Is math or undeclared/humanities a hard major to get into/ impacted???
