For people who have been accepted - what time of day is best to check the portal. I literally am checking it 4-5 times each day, and am basically getting very little done as I anxiously wait. The funny thing is - my daughter is so calm about the whole thing. She told me , " things always have a way of working out for me, so i don’t worry about things. Where ever I go, thats where I should be"
I could choke her - she is so right !!!
can someone quantify my chances for uci?
I have a 3.8 UC GPA, 1790 SAT score, played on the tennis team my junior year, was president of Veteran’s Club ( we fund-raised and donated to places like Pathway home etc.), member of National Honor Society, MESA, FBLA, Upward Bound, Science Olympiad, Medical Honor Society ( we would teach kids about medicine and being doctors), and have been in all AP/IB classes since freshman year. I ask because I was rejected from UC Riverside for computer science (and plan to appeal the decision) even though I qualify for statewide path. Thanks in advance!
@notsopatientlywaiting Only CHP students were already accepted, the rest start coming out the 17th.
GO EATERS BEAT CAL POLY UP IN LAST HOME GAME!!
@atg1046
That appeal will most likely not work. It doesn’t matter if you’re eligible for statewide path because you only get accepted to a campus that has room and it would be the one you didn’t apply to. You have a decent GPA but that SAT score maybe be one of the reasons you didn’t get in. Keep in mind it would be a good score if it was for a less competitive major, but this is Computer Science. Also you only appear to be a mere member in any clubs and only played tennis for one year. If there is one thing colleges want to see in extracurricular it’s commitment. You need to commit to one or two extracurricular and build on that. I was accepted to UC Riverside for Computer Science, and for me I am a tennis coach and work regular hours along with being on the tennis team all 4 years (hoping to go to CIF finals 3rd year in a row and win). I don’t know how your essay was, but maybe it wasn’t strong enough.
@atg1046
If you didn’t get UCR it will be tough for you to get into UCI unless you bring in some new compelling info about yourself that you can put in your appeal.
@atg1046: I agree with @Canon7130’s assessment especially since CS is so competitive. You want your stats above the averages for all schools to have a decent chance for an acceptance. Qualifying for ELC means UC Merced if you are not accepted into any other UC’s.
@atg1046 I think your major weakness is that you applied to a super competitive major, and despite you have a lot of extra curriculars, the focus is all over the place and is more sciencey/medical? rather than comp sci. Colleges like to see consistency and passion in the activities you do/interest. Having one extra curricular for 4 years is better than having a different extra curriclar every year. Though you got rejected from UCR, it is not the end of the world! If you qualify for statewide context, you’ll probably get UC Merced. Or maybe some of the other schools you applied to will accept you, best of luck!
@Gumbymom @Canon7130 Thanks for the information. Hopefully I can make my appeal strong enough to change their decision :).
For people who say Computer Science is a very competitive major to get into,
I applied as CS and I heard that the following campuses do not care about the major I put:
Berkeley: because it’s within College of Letters and Science, which all majors are equally competitive
San Diego: because SD does not consider major during admissions process (They could give you undeclared if you don’t qualify for the major you chose)
Irvine(?): same as SD’s reason
Please correct me if I am wrong.
@veggiern CHP
What are my chances?
4.28 GPA
1740 SAT
Applied for Public Health Sciences
Is UC davis decisions coming out on 3/11 or 3/13? Can someone please clarify with proofs?
@hiDreamer Doesnt irvine accept by the college you apply to?
@thecollegekid11 : Yes you are correct. Some schools mentioned in post #170 like UCSD admits into the university first then into the major. What this has to do with @atg1046’s chances at UCI, I really do not understand? In general, most CS majors are admitted by major at the UC’s. Exceptions listed above UCB L&S/UCSD and I believe UCD L&S.
@VMaple
Based on the info you gave it’s really 50/50. While your GPA is pretty good, that SAT score is more than 100 points below the average, which places you in the lower 25th percentile there I believe. That said, any good extracurricular or two that you have committed to may tip the scales in your favor and make up for the SAT score along with the rigor of your courses. Another important factor to consider is the competitiveness of the major you’re applying for. The less competitive it is the higher chance you have.
What are my chances?
4.07 UC GPA/4.15 Weighted
3.8 Unweighted
33 ACT
780 Math II and 670 Biology (M)
300+ volunteer hours, really good ECs
Good essays
ELC: Yes
For the people posting stats, you should look at the average gpa’s for Irvine/ other UC’s. I think at this point it does not really make a difference whether your stats look good or not. It’s up to the decision of the admissions office which comes soon hopefully!
And I don’t know if this is a stupid question or not but what is CHP?
