which one is more distinguished? in 2010, which school do you think will be the better school that everyone wants to go to?

lol IRVINE for sure

IRVINE! Haha... this is the UCI board, after all...

Anyway, UCI is ranked higher, but more people at my school like Davis for some reason. Not that it isn't a good school, because it is, from what I've heard and read. But yeah... according to US News, UCI is #40 and UCD is #48.

Last year, there was a reporting error so UCD slipped a few notches. I expect that this year, UCI will still be ranked ahead of UCD, but by maybe 1 or 2 places and not 8.

I think in 2010 and beyond, UCI will continue to rise in the ranks and will be ranked ahead of UCD. UCI continues to outpace the numbers of applications recieved over UCD by a significant margin http://www.ucop.edu/news/factsheets/2006/fall+2006+app_table+3.pdf

UCI has a goal of becoming a flagship campus (like UCB and UCLA) and have a rigourous strategic plan to try to achieve those goals which also helps to increase their rankings in US News - ie, more on-campus housing.

But what about the campus atmosphere? If you lived on campus at Irvine (in the dorms) what would be your typical routine, like where would you hang out on (i) a weekday (ii) weekend? (Assuming you didn't have family in SoCal)
Do students study on campus, or are there other coffeehouses, etc. off campus where students tend to gather?

When people go out (older 21+), where would they typically go? Is there a neighborhood near the campus anywhere? Do they go to Costa Mesa & Newport Beach area for instance, or is there something closer?

Son seriously considering UCI, this is a concern.

At UCDavis students often study at Starbucks, Cafe Roma, Borders coffeehouse, etc. which are adjacent to campus in different directions. The campus is walking distance from downtown with its array of little shops, restaurants, music and book stores.

UCI was solidly ranked in the top 10 among public schools in the late 90s, and then a reporting error on UCI's part caused them to slip and allowed Davis to pass them in the rankings. So it's almost justice that the same happened to Davis to put them back where they should have been in the first place had neither messed up.

But both schools are really good. Do you want NorCal vs. SoCal? Cows or girls in bikinis (sometimes there's not much of a difference)? Aggies or Anteaters? Far from home or close to home?

We live just outside Davis, its almost too close to home for my son. And I work at UCD, I'm there all the time! We're comfortable with the quality of education at both. But our son is trying to choose between UCI and several other schools, his concern about UCI is that he doesn't have a good picture of the lifestyle/atmosphere. He visited the campus for auditions, but had to rush off to UCSB so didn't get much of a feel for the area.

my counselors are telling everyone that Davis is better than Irvine!!! Gah I hate them because they dont know anything...and I live in So Cal!

riparian-

Have your son attend the Stay Over Program to see what the atmosphere is like...if he had auditions he must either be music or dance. If it's dance then your decision should be a no-brainer...I don't know as much about the music program, though.

if you ask everyone at school and most likely other people outside of school they'll say UCD. i think it's just more popular for some reason. dont know why but not a lot of people has heard of UCI?? maybe cuz it's a lot newer? really strange. i'm having the same problem deciding too and my counselor said the same thing. i only got one teacher to say UCI because he used to live down there so yah.

i got into both but im choosing irvine over davis. i think theyre both on the same level and it really depends on how well you apply yourself there. anyways irvine seems more fun than davis.

i got into both as well. but i only got accepted into the winter quarter for irvine. not sure where to go because there's not guarantee housing for winter transfers. and i've been in socal all my life.. so don't know if i want to stay here. hard choice.

I hadn't heard about the Stay Over program, thanks for the suggestion.
For some reason we never received a packet or letter from UCI, just the online acceptance. So if there was info for new freshmen that was mailed, we are uninformed.

If you are from SoCal it might be fun to move up north, just to be closer to different places like Tahoe, Bay area, Mount Lassen, for a change of scene. Just as for our family, it is fun and interesting to visit SoCal. After college, you tend to get tied down with jobs, family's school schedules and activities, and it is harder to move somewhere new.

sneak1eeone:
Have you visited both UCI and UCD?

i dont plan on visiting the campuses, i already have my heart set on irvine.

I didn't think so. To say one school "seems" more fun than another without visiting is probably not a great way to make a choice. If you can visit you really should :)
Good luck to you.

UCI>UCD

UCI is just better....:-) no need to argue

yes..but WHY is it better? UC Davis kids at least say that their school is better because of the atmosphere...etc etc. What makes UCI great/fun/wonderful/where we should all go? I'm deciding between UC Davis and UC Irvine and as of now, I am really half and half. Help.

new question!
which college is harder to get into?

Irvine is statistically.

BUT some people do get into Irvine and rejected at Davis. It can also depend on the major you applied for at each school, as each school has different impacted majors.
