Basically I’m currently attending a CC and hope on transferring next fall. I have most of my IGETC completed and only got a couple things left. Basically in high school I took spanish 1 which I got a D- in and then I took spanish 2 and got a B in that. I knew in high school that for a UC you need 2 years of a language to apply. I had talked to my counselor about it back then and he said that since I’ve gotten a B in spanish 2 it meets the requirement.
I don’t know if my counselor was lying or do I actually meet the IGETC language requirement? I have a meeting with my CC counselor later this week and I am going to ask him then, but I thought I’d get your guys opinion on this. Thanks.
That’s correct. As long as the last term of the two year language is C or better you have fulfilled the requirement for IGETC. Language is a validation subject, meaning knowledge at a certain level implies knowledge of earlier levels. He was not lying.
That’s fantastic! This will save me having to take a language now. Just wanted to make sure though, on the IGETC paper that I have it says, “Completion of two years of high school coursework (US high school or high school in a country where the language instruction is in English) in a language other than English, with a grade of C minus or better in each course. The two years must be in the same language.”
I’m just worried about the part where it says “each course”. Do you think that I still met the requirement Ohm? Thanks for your response by the way!
ALSO THIS: If a student earns a D in the first semester of Spanish 1, would a grade of C or better in the second semester validate the first semester grade?
Yes. A grade of C in the second semester of Spanish 1 validates the first semester. Both grades are used in calculating the GPA for the Scholarship Requirement. This same principle applies to any language/any level course.
