Language IGETC requirement Qs.

Could high school's language courses be used to satisfy the IGETC's "Language Other than English" requirement for UCs?

If so, would my grades for these courses negatively impact my application? Would they factor into my GPA?

(1st year) Spanish 1 - C
(1st year) Spanish 2 - C
(2nd year) Spanish 3 - D
(2nd year) Spanish 4 - C

I'm currently not attending a JC by the way; I'm just planning everything-out beforehand.

These are APs right?

No, these are not AP courses.

You can not use them, sorry.

“For IGETC’s foreign language requirement, 2 years of one FL in high school would be acceptable.”

Interesting, here (above) a counselor from one of the UCs sent to me in an email. I was wondering if anyone did this before.

It’s also listed on the website:

Proficiency in a Language Other Than English

Students may demonstrate proficiency for the purpose of fulfilling the Language Other Than English IGETC requirement in one of the following ways:

* Complete two years of high school coursework in one language other than English with a grade of C or better.

How are you able to take 4 years of Spanish in 2 years…

IIRC high school language classes are 1 year in length each.

Unless you mean

Spanish 1-1st semester c 2nd semester c
Spanish 2-1st semester d 2nd semester c

If that the case than your screwed for the high school portion but if you actually got a C in 1+2 then your fine all you need is 2 years

No, Spanish 1-1st semester c, Spanish 2-2nd semester c etc…

Wow your school compacts a year of language class into 1 semester? dam

Than you are fine but i would ask a U.C rep for sure

Well thing is, it’s the IGETC we’re talking about. IGETC’s are certified by your CC, not the UCs.

In my case, I studied high school abroad (ESL here) but my CC won’t give me credit for LOTE, just because there ain’t anyone who could test me. I even brought my transcripts from 1st grade till HS for them to see lol.

Yes high school foreign language WILL count for IGETC even if they are not AP’s. I just got my IGETC certified last month. You have to give your CC an official high school transcript though. But i am not sure about that D that you received. You should consult with your counselor on that issue.

What if you took Spanish 2 in Highschool but took Spanish 1 in Middle school – does that qualify as two years of “high school coursework” ?

^yes. that’s what i did to, but i went up to spanish 3 in 10th grade. when UCs say u need 2 years in a foreign language, they don’t actually mean u have to take TWO years of it. you just need to take the equivalent of a second yr level class or higher. so if you’re mexican and just skipped spanish 1 and 2 and started out at spanish 3, then that’s ok.
