UC San Diego TAG - Political Science

Hey - so recently, I was planning on applying to UC San Diego with TAG as a History major but I've completely changed my mind and switched over to Political Science instead. I have two of the prereqs done (American Govt. and Comparative Politics), I only need International Politics. However, it's not offered at my campus during the fall and only the spring (hopefully).

Does UCSD care if I'm missing one prereq when applying with TAG? To Political Science?

I have the IGETC done. I have a 3.8 GPA and just need International Politics. But, if it's not offered during the spring - will that have a strong effect on my application?

At UCSD, TAG doesn’t guarantee you admission to your major, just admission to the campus. So if you TAG and the admission officers don’t feel you’ve completed enough pre-reqs for the major, they’ll admit you as an undeclared major as opposed to rejecting you. TAG “guarantees” you’ll at least be admitted as an undeclared major and will not be rejected, nothing else.

I’m not a social science major, so I all I can offer you is speculation, but normally missing one or two pre-reqs for a major isn’t that big of a deal. However, when your major only has a handful of pre-reqs then it’s probably significant. Some majors have 10+ and missing two, even three, is commonplace and people are admitted to the major with a few missing pre-reqs. I’m not sure what would happen in your case since you only have three and would be missing one. If you can, try to see if the class is offered at a nearby community college and just take it there. If it isn’t or that’s not an option, I think the fact that your college doesn’t offer it is the best case scenario and might be forgiven, although admissions won’t really know when your college offered a class or not. So if you can’t take it, it’d be worth mentioning in your app that your college didn’t offer the course while you’re there.

From UCSD regarding TAG transfers: Note: If you’re a transfer student, you’re encouraged to complete as many of your major-preparation courses as possible before submitting your application.

Key word being encouraged!

I’m assuming you eventually want to go into law because of both the history and poli-sci majors am I right?

If you do not complete all the pre recs you can always complete them at UCSD, especially f it’s only one course and you have completed IGETC. You can always look at other CC’s as far as taking it online, I know my CC (Moorpark) has international politics in fall and spring but not sure about the summer.

Is UCSD your only choice?

I am considering law school - I’m actually looking to major in both Sociology and Political Science (or minor in one, we’ll see). I have the prereqs for the former all done. I considered History for awhile but changed it after knowing I have more of an interest for politics.

UCSD is not my only choice. I’m applying to Berkeley and UCLA as a Sociology major and UC Davis and UCSD as a Political Science major. I’m also applying to USC.

I’m doing a sociology major going into law school

Uhm I think at UCB and UCLA you’ll be a pre major, UCD haven’t heard much, UCSD is good, I’ve heard that UCSB is good for political science and sociology as well and as for USC I think their academics speak for themselves but at a hefty cost.

I think the pre recs are all the same for both majors as they are very closely knitted in the social sciences.

Just go wherever you can get the most funding and TAG where you think it’s most needed. Like the above poster said you are guaranteed the school but not to your major so just keep that in mind.
