UC SD Rescinding Admission Question. One D, Two A's

Hi

There is high chance that I will be getting D in a math (Discrete Mathematics) course.
I got admitted to UCSD with Computer Science major.
Currently I have 62 completed units with 3.69 GPA.
And I am taking 3 classes right now (4 actually but one is not UC transferable):
3units Discrete Math
3units DataStructures in C++
3units Operating Systems

It is pretty much guaranteed that I will be getting A's on other classes.
So if I get D, A, A then I will end up with 3.0 GPA for this semester.
Also, Discrete Math and DataStructure are major-req courses and operating system is not.

My excuse for getting D is that professor uses the book that's written 1985~86, and there is no student solution manual. So if I have question before the exam and her office hours are occupied, I'm stuck without help.
I know it's not an excuse that UC will see and say not a problem :(
I want to get some advices/informations before I call UCSD.
Please help!!

Thanks to all in advance.

I do not think your brain has literally frozen, that would be incompatible with life and you would not have survived. What I do think has happened is that you have allowed yourself to fall into a situation where you believe that you can not do combinations/permutations and when you encounter one on a test your anxiety level rises to the point that you can not think clearly about what you have to do to solve the problem. You need to practice doing such problems for several hours a day until you reach a point where you have confidence in your ability to solve them and do not panic when you see one on a test.

I am not an expert on Computer Science but I think that I have heard that Discrete Mathematics is one of the most important courses that a CS major must take. You can not get a D in this course without running the very serious risk that your admission to UCSD will be revoked. Right now you have to take the attitude that there is nothing in your life more important than getting at least a C in this course and studying for it should be your only priority.

I’m not sure what advice could help in advance of the call. All you can do is call them and hope for the best. If they say it’s ok, then great. If not, there’s nothing anyone can really do about it.

I have a similar situation as you. I got a D in my physics class (Comp E. major) but A’s in all my other classes this last semester. I called them last monday and they said it should be fine as long as you don’t break any of the terms in your contract (not finishing one of the subject requirements, getting <2.0 for that semester, maintaining your overall GPA.) Try calling them on Monday to make double sure though, and make sure to repost their response to help future students in this type of situation. Im planning to retake the class at UCSD this summer too, but I didnt even mention that to them when i talked to them on the phone. Good luck, and hopefully see you in some of my classes in CS.

Thanks all for replies, I will call UCSD on Monday and post their response on this thread.

as long as your above a 3.0 for your last semester, you should be fine. Its still a passing grade and its above the provisional contract. you still have to report the grade in advance before you send out your transcript

Book from the 80s? Is the author Steven Roman? Just wondering if this is math 10 at smc.

I believe they take it on a case by case basis. It never hurts to give it a shot with a call and ask, but technically it’s not looking good. If they want grades no lower than a C, then that’s a fairly specific requirement. Good luck though!

I made a fake IGETC just to add all my classes to it to see what I needed to get this last semester in order to keep a 3.5 (before the 3.0 rule). Try that to at least know if the D will be ok for your gpa so you aren’t too worried over the weekend. If you don’t need the class to transfer you should be ok, but you’ll have to retake it at UC. Don’t give the book excuse to UCSD though unless they really ask for an excuse. I think it “I got a D.” sounds better than " I got a D because the book was old and…"

Good luck
