UC Stereotypes and Truth

Yes, we have all heard the stereotypes associated with each UC school's students...or have we? And if we have, do we agree on what we've heard? Aaaand, lastly, how true are they?

This is what I have heard most frequently:

1.) Berkeley - Intellectual, liberal, competitive, independent, anti-social, depressed.
2.) LA - Preppy, athletic, typical, outgoing, materialistic, shallow.
3.) Davis - Nice, quiet, friendly, moderate, laid-back.
4.) Santa Barbara - Partiers, unfocused, fun, wild.
5.) Irvine - ...No idea.
6.) San Diego - Intelligent, nerdy, anti-social, boring.
7.) Santa Cruz - Stoners, liberal, hipsters, artistic, chill, pseudo-intellectual.
8.) Riverside - No clue.
9.) Merced - No clue.

And now I KNOW that these are STEREOTYPES and therefore do not apply to everyone. But I thought it'd be interesting to get others' take on the subject. How true are the stereotypes in general for each campus? Noticeable in the atmosphere or totally made up?

This thread is stupid.

^ ya.

10char

Someone asked me today which school I’m transferring to and I replied, “UCI.”
His response was, “The Asian school.”
:/

All the UC schools are asian schools, except maybe Merced/Riverside. The higher ranked the university, the more asians; it’s a fact of life.

Also, I’ve been to the classes at UCR and one of the professors said that UCR stands for University of California Reject.

Screw these stereotypes and lets get our education.! :)

Seems like you hit the nail on the head. Merced and Riverside=what? Where’s that? People actually live there? O gawd I feel sorry for them? UCI=infested with asians, ucb, ucla, ucsd REJECTS

My Anthropology professor got his BA and PhD from UC Riverside. He is the head of the Behavioral Sciences department and is constantly listed as the most influential and inspirational professor at my school. He is also pretty “famous” within the Anthropological circles, and has done a ton of amazing ****.

Cal-Zuckerberg types
UCLA-Hollywood types

^ LOL, talebi818 just nailed it. Although I have a few good friends who go to Cal, there are tons of people I know who’re Zuckerberg type.

I’ve met a lot of UCI students and they all seem to be very sharp!

^thats because they are all asian.

Eduardo Saverin on Asian Girls: “They’re hot, they’re smart…and they can’t dance.”

(modified to apply to me, a non-Jewish white male)

I’m not at all a “specialist,” but that description sounds pretty good to me. Maybe I ought to choose UCI.

hipsters…ugh

One thing that you can be sure of, is that there’s probably going to be one Black or Native person in your class for the entire four years of school o_O

Yeah, I almost put “Asians” under UCI, but decided to be PC instead. And besides, every UC is pretty much an Asian school…I don’t really get why UCI gets that rep more than the others. Hm.

Anyway, I know this thread is a tiny bit stupid. But it’s fun. AND it could actually be productive cuz, ya know, the stereotypes probably come from somewhere and could actually create certain atmospheres at the schools.

For instance, I visited UCSB just last week. And I could sense the laid-back, party atmosphere pretty immediately. Sure, not everyone was walking around with a beer bottle in hand, but it still created the ATMOSPHERE. Which is important when choosing a college.

I think stereotypes actually become reality the more people are familiar with them. I know lots of people, for example, who do not want to go to UCSB because they don’t think they’ll fit the “Barbie and Ken” stereotype, and I now people who specifically want to g there because of the stereotype. So in a sense, stereotypes can help the schools attract the people who match them.

Yeah, that’s another great point. I’m attracted to certain UC schools cuz of the stereotypes, and I’m less intrigued by others for the same reason. We all want to find the right fit.

UCB= competitive elitists
UCLA=preppy and asians
UCSD=science and engineering nerds
UCD=moderate, no specific stereotype
UCSB=filled to the top with bros
UCI=filled to the top with asians
UCSC=hippies and stoners
UCR/UCM=rejects

I didn’t see any Barbie and Kens at UCSB o_O the people at SDSU are a million times better looking.
