How does the UC TAG work?
I know that for UCSD, you need a 3.5 GPA, but some majors are more competitive.
Does this mean that if you have a 3.5 GPA you will be guaranteed admission, regardless of your major?
Can someone explain the process more extensively?
Thanks.

UCSD TAG guarantees you in as long as it is a non-impacted major. If it is impacted, TAG is useless, which is why they ask you to choose an alternative major.

TAG guarantees admission, but not major. If your major is impacted you are asked to select a non-impacted alternative major on the application. TAG is not useless because even if you are not offered admission to the impacted major, you can still go to the school and apply for transfer into the major at a later date. This isn’t the case for all the impacted majors, but some still allow you to transfer into them post-enrollment.

Would economics be considered an impacted major?

No economics major at UCSD is not impacted.

^? So they all are?

It’s not a “guarantee” but if you apply for a non-impacted major, as Vintagesoul said, it’s virtually a guarantee so long as you meet all the requirements.

Impacted majors are:
Division of Biological Sciences:
All majors

Jacobs School of Engineering:
Aerospace Engineering
Bioengineering
Bioengineering: Biotechnology
Mechanical Engineering
