UC to CC to CSU/UC transfer

I’m currently attending a CC after transferring out of UC Merced before this spring semester started. I’m looking into Nursing school, but I want to give Biology one last try. I do not have any stats as of right now, but I was wondering how hard the Biology program at UC Davis is, and additionally, what would be a good CSU to go for Nursing? I have heard from numerous friends that SFSU is good for Nursing. As for Biology, I just feel that I might not be a strong Chemistry student to succeed, but I did not have the chance to take on a Chemistry college course yet. Any tips or advice? Thank you!

look at the CSU nursing programs to see what they require in order to be accepted as a xfer into the major. Most nursing programs have supplemental applications. Read thru them now so you understand what they are looking for. The extra points you can get for things such as volunteer work may make the difference between accept and deny; its easy to add them to your activities now, you won’t be able to if the first time you learn of them is when you submit your app.

Probably a good idea to work with the xfer center at your CC as well.

One thing thats a little unclear is you seem to imply you were a Bio major at Merced but didn’t have the “chance” to take Chem in college. Bio majors start off with a Chem class 1st quarter, so something seems a little unusual here.

Nursing is really competitive at the CSUs, even the non-impacted campuses like Channel Islands and Bakersfield. @Mikemac has a good point about the supplemental applications. Great idea to look at them now and see what they are looking for.

I would caution you though - nursing is a VERY difficult curriculum everywhere. If Bio isn’t for you, perhaps nursing isn’t either.

See if you can get an appointment with someone in the department at your local CSU - sit down with them and talk about what’s required to gain admission - then to succeed in the program. Let them know where you are and ask what it will take to get there.

Good luck.

I can tell you that at UC Davis, all majors requiring Chemistry take the same Chem class series which includes Engineering and Bio majors etc… The Chem classes are considered “weed out” classes. If you were having problems at UC Merced with their Bio program, it will definitely more difficult and competitive at UCD.

I took a remedial Chemistry class so I meant I never got placed into the actual course, only got a review of the material I learned in high school.

But thank you everyone for your responses!
