Hello everyone, I need guidance on my predicament because the transfer counselors at my current institution do not know what they’re doing.
I am currently a sophomore at community college and in the process of applying to another UC. I took my first semester (Fall 2018) at UC Merced (Bio1+Bio1L, Phys8, Chem1, and SPRK [GE]) and then transferred to my local community college because I was sexually harassed.
According to Assist.org, Bio1+Bio1L (contemporary biology) is considered to be both Bio11A (first semester intro biology) and Bio11B (second semester intro biology) at my community college. I talked to a counselor and they stated that Bio1+bio1L from UC Merced only counts towards Bio 11A, thus I would have to take the second semester of biology (Bio11B) in my preceding semester. The catch is that when I tried to register for my second semester of biology, Bio11B, the registration system stated that I could not register for the course because it was a repeat course (I also tried to register for Bio11A as well and the same rejection was given). Of course this leads to the logical conclusion that both semesters are considered to have been completed, but I am still unsure.
I also checked Transferology and it stated that Bio1+Bio1L at UC Merced is equivalent to the 2nd quarter of biology (Bio7B) at UCLA (my prospective school) if I had transferred directly from UC to UC. Also, the course description of Bio1 at UC Merced states,
”Introduction to the major concepts in biology including origin of life, evolution, DNA, genes and genomes, principles and patterns of inheritance, genotype to phenotype, gene, environment and disease relationships, biotechnology, ecosystem structure and function, nutrient cycles and pollution, biodiversity, earth systems,”
which is similar to the course description of Bio 7B at UCLA, which states,
“Principles of Mendelian inheritance and population genetics. Introduction to principles and mechanisms of evolution by natural selection, population, behavioral, and community ecology, and biodiversity, including major taxa and their evolutionary, ecological, and physiological relationships,”
and in Bio1, we also intensively covered cell biology, which parallels the course description of Bio 7A, which states,
“Introduction to basic principles of cell structure and cell biology, biochemistry, and molecular biology,”
But I’m unsure if I’d get credit for both Bio7A and 7B because it seems too good to be true. Thus, I deduced that I would have to take Bio11A at my CC to transfer as Bio7A at UCLA. The problem is that I can neither register for Bio11A nor Bio 11B because of the registration block.
Can anyone provide clarity on the situation or have a similar narrative that may give me insight?
Do courses from a UC transfer directly to another UC if CC was an intermediate between the two, or do the units from a UC transfer to the CC, then to the other UC?
Also, after transferring to another UC, will my GPA start over from 0.00, remain the same after transferring from CC, or pick up from the last UC that I attended (as if the cc coursework had not affected the GPA)?
Thanks in advance!
