I used to go to Boston University until I was academically dismissed for low GPA. I have attended a local CC for the last three semesters accumulating 62 credits in classes that include the classes I didn't do well in at BU, as well as the classes shown on the assist websites guide.

I would like to transfer into a UC or a CSU. However, I met with my CC's counselor today and to be honest I'm not sure what she was trying to tell me. Something along the lines of me either having too many credits to apply for a transfer or that I have to apply differently?

Anyways, my questions are:

1) Equivalent courses I have taken at the CC will not be counted twice towards credit maximum limits correct (Doesn't make much sense to count the same class twice I figure)?

2) The higher grades in the equivalent courses I have taken at the CC will be used for GPA purposes instead of my lower ones at BU? I've also heard they might take the average? I understand they will look at the transcript as a whole.

Please let me know if I'm doing something wrong here. I'm panicking a bit thinking that with my academic dismissal I'll never be able to get back into a 4 year university. >_<

They’ll look at both transcripts; this is your chance (in your essay) to explain the circumstances of your dismissal, what you’ve learned from it, how you’ve improved and why you deserve another chance.

This is very important: you still a chance to get into a UC despite academic dismissal, but you need to show the admissions that you’ve learned from the experience and have better grades now.

As for the credits, could you count them up and post the number? Some UC’s will be harsh on the cap, but I know UC Irvine doesn’t have a limit on transferring credits.

I racked up 34 credits at BU not including the courses I got anything below a C in or PE courses. Of those 34, approximately 20 or so have been redone in some equivalent course at my CC. Also every course I got below a C in was redone with a considerably better grade.

I just remembered another question today concerning credits for the application. This situation applies to a number of my classes between my CC and BU, but I’ll use one specific example:

At my CC, Chemistry 1 is a 5 credit course. At BU it is a 4 credit course. Both schools run on semester system. How are they going to interpret this for purposes of GPA and credit cap?

You could apply for academic renewal at BC. This would effectively wipe off your bad grades for G.P.A. purposes. They will still be listed on your transcript though… it might list the grade, or it might not. Basically if they accept your A.R. then the class will have a annotation on your transcript. Each school is different. This is a good option especially since you took the classes over at another institution.

This would also help you as you wont have to worry about the unit cap if you get your grades knocked off with academic renewal. Talk to you counselor about it and look up the BC policy for academic renewal in their college catalog.

I had a 1.5 at an institution years ago, but made better grades recently in the same courses. I did academic renewal and made that 1.5 into a 3.6.
