UC Transfer Maximum Units

I am wondering if there is more information about the maximum units you can have before the UC’s will deny you for transfer. I attended UCSC for a year before I went home and have been attending the local community college for the past year. I will have 86 semester units finished by the end of Spring. I saw on UCLA’s website that they don’t accept students from universities with more than 86 units. Will that be a problem for me even though I am now a student enrolled at CC and can I take more classes? I dropped UCSC and have submitted my TAG to Irvine for next fall as well.

Davis and Merced have 80 max. You are right at the border with UCLA (86.5, right?). I assume it’s ok, but I don’t know how they calculate that stuff.

http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/transfer/advising/transferring-credits/index.html explains how they calculate the number of units for transfer credit and limitation purposes. Note that UC course work does count against the unit maximum for transfer to a UC, since it is fully transferable (rather than being capped at 70 semester or 105 quarter units).

https://www.ucdavis.edu/sites/default/files/upload/files/f17tip_unitlimits.pdf may have some more information (some information is Davis-specific).

I will have exactly 85.65 semester units at the end of Spring. So does that mean I can’t take any more classes because it will put me over 86 for UCLA? Also is there any information about what UCSD does?

All your lower division at a CCC will cap at 70, even if you take 80, etc. Then add on all the UCSC courses on top of the 70 (or whatever number of units under 70 you took at the CCC).

Example:
CCC 85 = 70
UCSC = 15
TOTAL: 85

CCC = 50
UCSC = 15
TOTAL: 65

UCSD is 90, as are the others (except UCLA, Merced, Davis)

@ohm where does it say that the cap is 90? I can only find on UCSD’s website that they consider you a senior if you have taken 20 units of upper division(https://admissions.ucsd.edu/transfer/). I have read that but I have never found a source for that.

Also if I took one more 4 unit class to put me at 89.65 units would that round up to 90 or would I be in the clear?

Undergraduate lower division units from CCC aren’t capped in the sense that going over 70 will mean denying transfer. The UC just give unit credit for the 70… and subject credit ( but no unit credit ) for the others.

For context I currently have 30.65 semester units from UCSC and will have 55 semester units from CC by the end of Spring.

Stresucst. How many units did you complete at the UC before attending CCC?

@Stressucst look at the link ucbalumnus put up - the Davis one. It’s on the second page.

Looking at what you wrote:
CCC = 55
UCSC = 30.65
TOTAL: 85.65

You are essentially at max for UCLA, and UCSD is 4 units more max. Basically, you need to stop now to be safe. Any more CCC units will be added on.

So… if you have not fulfilled your major req, you could be in trouble.

http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/quick-reference-2017.pdf Check out page 30-31. The concern would be if the previous UC units were upper division… and if that would put you in senior status. Doesn’t sound like you have upper division UC units… likely no problem.

However UCLA does not accept high unit juniors at all. If you plan to tag to UCI call a transfer admission counselor there… ask about their policy of accepting high unit junior transfers. Their policy lists that they take “some”. Seek clarity directly from UCI

Just saw that you have 30.65 units from UCSC… how’d I miss that

Continued…That is cutting it very close to the max. Again, clarify with UCI before taking any more classes

http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/tag-matrix.pdf UC TAG mentions UCI 90 unit max (combined CCC and previous UC coursework). The question then becomes … Have you taken all the courses needed for your tag to the major by the end of Spring?

I believe I have finished all of my requirements. Another question: If I got a 3 on AP Composition in high school does that satify the first composition requirement? I saw on igetc that I get credit for the test but does that count as meeting the requirement of taking the class?

For UCI, a 3 on AP English (either exam) gives 8 quarter units of elective credit. It does not help fulfill any requirements other than Entry Level Writing if you are unable to get or use IGETC certification.

Ok last question. Do the UC’s round your units? I see on one of those links that UCLA stop accepting at 86.5 and that Irvine won’t accept tag at 90 units. If i take another class that puts me at 89.65 would that round up to 90 undeclaring my tag or would it stay below the 90 threshold keeping my tag acceptable? Thank you.
