UCB Confusion

Hi guys I'm new here so bear with me about my problem.

I just received an email from Berkley telling me to complete additional forms. So I went to myBerkley and started filling those forms. A problem then comes to me in Breadth Requirements (COLLEGE OF LETTERS AND SCIENCE).

The foreign language part is the one that troubles me. For IGETC its says you can have 2-yrs high school foreign language class. For L&S it says you need 3yrs high school instead of 2-yrs.

Problem is that I choose not to complete IGETC, and I only have 2-yrs of foreign language class from high school. So what do I do?

I am a native Chinese speaker, so if possible, is there test that can substitute this requirement? I cannot find it by myself.

Anyway, reply is greatly appreciated.

IGETC and Breadth Requirements are completely different…if you followed the breadth requirements, none of the IGETC requirements apply towards you. you must complete 3 yrs of foreign language. the fact that u speak chinese means absolutely nothing. unless u meant u went to school in china and english counts as ur foreign language

Can you elaborate more on this? So IGETC option does not related to Breadth requirement? I’m not sure I followed you here. Breadth requirement says can be completed using IGETC or L&S. So my only option is to complete IGETC during Spring? (Obviously taking 2 semesters of foreign language class or going back to high school is not an option).

If you completed the foreign language requirement in HS you just click the additional question box for IGETC right?

Ok here’s what i know. i applied to haas for berkeley. they require the seven course breadth requirements. i dont know if yours is the same or not. but in order to complete the language part i had to have comlpeted 3 yrs of foreign language in HS or 2 semesters of it in CC. for me, i don’t have the option of choosing IGETC or breadth. i’m require to do breadth as IGETC is a completely different Gen Ed. plan

just link me to ur articulation agreement b/w ur cc and berkeley on assist.org w/ u major to see if i can help.

holyschmidt,

I was thinking that too. I’m not sure those boxes are for IGETC only or for all.

Obviously I didn’t do a good job on looking those L&S requirement.

You just click the box saying “I did not fulfill the IGETC requirements” or whatever and skip down to the L and S portion.

I think I’m going to complete IGETC instead. Since the deadline is at 01/30, that gives me enough time to know whether I’m in that critical writing class or not. Now I look back my transcript, I only need a critical writing class to complete IGETC.

Another question, if a grade change happens for Spring 2009, what should I do to let UCs (for all) know the new grade?

how do you put on the L&S requirement that you completed 3 years of a foreign language during high school? I’m trying to put that down, as well as the foreign language class I’m taking NOW and the AP exam I took… but there’s only 4 slots… like on the “Course Title” for example, can I just put “four years of high school Spanish”? lol help!

I am completing the breadth requirements through UC Reciprocity. Therefore, I skipped all the sections. Do I still need to check the box under the IGETC table listed “ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS” indicating how many years of Spanish I took in high school?

hey guys! As far as I know, if I finished high school in a foreign country, I already fulfilled the requirement for a foreign language. But the supplemental application does not actually give me this option. Am I supposed to write that in additional comments section???
