UCB Financial Aid

sucks. all they asked me for was a certification of independence.

Hope they don't ask me for that..too much work.

you won't...the verfication that i got was for dependent student.

for those who received these calbear scholarships, what were your gpas?

The CalBears description on Berkeley's website is kind of vague. "Eligibility. The Cal Bears Scholarship is awarded to new and continuing students on the basis of both academic merit and financial need." Is this an either/or? Or is it both? For those who got the scholarship, do you think it was more merit based or need based? ...If they're giving money to high achievers from average middle class families then I totally screwed myself in terms of costs...

Oh well I still have my $1,000 from the GSE, lol

there givin me 11k and my parents make like 45k a year and my gpa was 3.85 so i dont know, i guess they felt sorry for me lol

i had a 3.9 and they gave me 8 grand for the Cal Bears Scholarship, in addition to grants.

My brother did not receive any financial aid when he went to Irvine, so my family was surprised when I received some money.

I'm not even sure what the "certification of independence" means. Is it just trying to verify that I'm over 18, cause one fo the options asked me to send my birth certificate or driver's license.

digitalash,

did you claim yourself as a dependent or independent student on fafsa? If you claimed yourself as an independent student, then you need to provide them with documents that you are indeed an independent student..independent student is usually students who are over 25..

btw, this lady from the financial aid office told me that most of the scholarships at Berkeley are need-based with the exception of regent scholarship. I asked cuz I haven't gotten any scholarship

My fafsa said I'm a dependent student, so why would they ask me for verification of independent status.

Dammit. if this is a screw up, and it looks like it is, there will be hell to pay.

bump

anyone get an email for the Berkeley Leadership scholarship?

Berkeley never email me about anything. (Obviously no Leadership scholarship info for me)
I got the same award amount, around 21048.
Seems like everyone's getting the same amount, are they subject to change?
How do ppl get the regent's scholarships?

For some odd reason my print out is showing off campus housing... I checked my fafsa and I applied for housing. My Calbears is about 12k

we should start a census.

How much do your parent's make and how much did UCB give you?

Parent's salary: 155 thousand p/year
Grants/Scholarships: 19 thousand

I think they set everyone to off-campus. Ok, digitalash, that is just ridiculous--did you lie on your fafsa? You aren't eligible for the federal grants you got. Unless you are an independent student?

that's the thing I was worried about. At first my fafsa said I was an independent, so I knew it was a mistake. I called the financial aid office and ifxed eveyrthing, so they now consider me as a dependent student. I got a new letter about a week or two later and they took about 3 grand away, but still gave me the rest. I don't know if this is another mistake, or if I'm just getting lucky.

It's a mistake, a serious one. You are not eligible for ANY aid with the amount your parents make, if you are a dependent student. You are certainly not eligible for federal grants. It's not a matter of luck; it's a matter of statistics.

Wow, $155,000/year. $19k is way too much to be getting for financial aid.

Man... 155 k per year and you still have grant? Your parents can defnitely afford you for college, you should not receive any grant; other poor students should because some can not even afford college.
What is your EFC on the fafsa by the way? I would say it is more than 50k right?

My parents think it's a mistake too. THe first time they saw it, they knew financial aid screwed up, and I couldn't accept the awards anyway. After they fixed the problem, I can now accept. It's either my parents are lying to me about their income, or they have considered another factor in my household. THey gave me a federal pell grant, fed seog grant and a cal bears scholarship.

The ethical thing is too report it, whcih I probably will, but I dont see how they can make this mistake.

Dude, it's simple. Look at your SAR (from your FAFSA). It will list your EFC (expected family contribution) as well as your parents' income.
