UCB transfer question

hey guys, my sister just got accepted to UCB as a freshmen...will it be helpful if I ask her to write them a letter about me?

cause I also applied to UCB as a transfer student this year

unfortunately, i don't think they care much about family connections.

also as a transfer student, they don't even accept letters of recommendation from your professors, so i doubt they'd look over one from your sister.

You're very cute!

pgsg, if you don't mind, since this is a UCB transfer question thread, may I post some of my own questions?

Ah, and ruyi, I am going to have to disagree. I was under the impression that Berkeley may accept letters of rec., it's only that they don't advertise it as much. It's not required, but it certainly won't help if you try. (I got my information from my school's transfer director)

My question:
When UC Berkeley posted their median GPA on a scale of 3.5~ - 3.8 ~, does that indicate the lowest and highest GPA they are willing to admit on average?

So, if there is someone who applied with a 3.4 GPA for the college of letters and science (since they admit by college), are they even considered?- given the fact they do not have any extraneous conditions.

I believe that statistic (3.53-3.88) is the interquartile range, or the middle 50% of GPA's. This means that 25% of the GPA's are above 3.88, and 25% are below 3.53, so yes, a 3.4 still has a chance. How large that chance is depends on which major you applied for, however.

they dont accept letters of recommendation.

Nuveen,

Thanks for the breakdown and clarification. So, for a non-impacted major like philosophy would be fine with that sort of a GPA, right?

CCstudent88, you will be competing against all other applicants specifically for the major and department. Impacting makes it harder but you have to remember that they do not admit everyone into non-impacted majors either.

Since I'm in the engineering department, I am not too confident on the competition in the L&S. That said, I have not met many transfers below 3.5. Which leads me to conclude, 3.4 is not too impressive, but admissions are always looking for unique individuals, considering more than a mere GPA.

Becareful with those ranges, they are VERY deceiving! Every major has their own range, just as nuveen said.

skiingfool101,

Thanks for the information. Well, it was a bit selfish of me to take this thread into my own hands. (I hope pgsg forgives me.)

The reason I say 3.4+, as in my case, is because in high school I took two community college courses and earned Cs in both, and another course at another community college, earning a b (Note* that was a good four years ago). If I had those removed from my cumulative transferable GPA, I would have had a 3.79. (of course this is the "could've" excuse again).

Nevertheless, I'm adamant on seeing through with going to UCB, even if it means holding out for another year and reapplying- seeing that I do have the time. Of course it was in my nature to express those grade concerns in the pertinent part of the application, but I still feel, things like that would normally weigh me down. That's why I posted the GPA to be viewed objectively, at first.

is family connection just unimportant in UCB? I doubt...
or is it just applies to Ivy schools.?

UCB does not require any req. for transfer students in the application, right...but I can't see any problems if I ask my sis to recommand me... unless they really don't care family connection

plz point out wt I said is incorrect..

if you doubt, why dont you call admissions and see what happens ;)?

Hey I know this thread is to address a different question but...does anyone know when Regents notifications will be sent out for transfer students?

Cal is a meritocracy, though I do advise you to send admissions your letter of recommendation from your sister, just because I want to see what happens :)

Keep us posted.

they dont want letters of rec, and they dont care about your sister.

the only time that helps is if your dad is a professor or something important within the university...

I was accepted to Cal as a freshman, but turned them down, but i may want to transfer there later, would that help me at all?

No, being accepted as a freshmen will not factor into your transfer decision; being someone smart and motivated enough to get accepted in this first place however, will usually translate into equal transfer success. Good luck.

While there doesn't appear to be a guarantee from the UC's for reapplying 1st year admits, it does seem that the requirements for eligibility for transfer admissions are a bit more accommodative.

Taken from the UC Admissions website:

"If you were eligible for admission to the University when you graduated from high school  – meaning you satisfied the Subject, Scholarship and Examination Requirements, or were identified by the University during your senior year as eligible in the local context and completed the Subject and Examination Requirements in the senior year  – you are eligible for transfer if you have a C (2.0) average in your transferable college coursework."
