UCD, An Overlooked UC?

From a current freshman...

Academics: not all that challenging but really depends on your major/expectations
College life: nice little city town, always a frat party on Friday and Saturday, plethora of activities if you're into that sort of thing
Housing: pretty decent, dorms are OK
Food: dining common food (stuff you eat freshman year) is marginal at best, off campus food is good depending on location

have friends from Socal who are bored the hell out at Davis and just smoke weed and drink every day, I guess that's what you do when you're bored and there's really nothing to do?

Hehehe... are we friends, by chance? :)

Seriously, though, this place is really drug infested. Two dealers on my floor alone. O_O

Lol so between the parties, casinos, and drug dealers on campus...I should always have something to do? Nice.

LOL, well, not really much else to do here. The college hamstrings freshman by not allowing them to park vehicles on campus. This, effectively, exiles you to Davis.

Whatever college you attend, though, you'll probably gonna split your time between studying and partying anyway.

I'm personally gonna go home on weekends for the spring semester. Just not enough stuff to do here.

What about the bus system? I know that freshmen aren't allowed to buy parking permits, but someone else who posted earlier mentioned visiting Sacramento or Tahoe or even Berkeley if I really wanted to. Is it uncommon to travel by bus/train?

Is it really a hassle to try and find things to do? a difference between having constant parties and finding clubs to join because I'd personally opt for the clubs. Lol I feel like I'm getting mixed reviews about Davis so I'm kind of confused.

You're going to get mixed reviews, lol. Honestly, there are 25,000 people that go to Davis. Each and every one is going to have a different thing to tell you, whether it be positive or negative. The hearsay you get on these boards will only tell you so much....

Tahoe is a bit hard to get to. However, I've been to Berkeley a couple times a quarter (about once a month). train is the easiest way, but, there is a shuttle that goes from UC Davis to Cal that costs only $5, but it only runs twice a day on the weekdays visiting friends and doing stuff in the bay area. Sacramento is very easy to get to by bus.

EdibleEgg, at this point you've really gotta come to Davis for a day or two (while school's in session like i said above) to see whether you like it here or not. No school is going to fit every single person out there, it's up to you to decide whether Davis fits you.

The majority of the happy kids are out having fun and not necessarily posting on here. My d goes to Tahoe many times during the winter and has numerous friends who have cabins there. She purchased a pass for snowboarding. The cost to her is minimal.

kmass are you finished with finals yet?

I'm planning to attend the Decision thing for SoCal students to get a better idea of what Davis is like anyway. It's just, I've heard things about SD that has turned me away from the school i.e. the really competitive students and my friend's older brother attends SD and he's really unhappy there. She mentioned something about their suicide rate which I don't think is true...but yeah. And like SB has a reputation for being a party school, so I'm just trying to figure out what people really attribute Davis with.

Thank you for your responses, by the way. :] I know that I'll be receiving mixed reviews when I'm asking mainly for opinions, but yeah, I'm hoping to create a list of pros/cons based on what people have to say about the school. Who knows better than students themselves, right?

Oh, kind of a side question, but how is the dance department at Davis? I know Irvine has a really nice one. I'm not really planning to major in dance, but I was wondering if you had to audition to take a class or something. Would you have to join the dance company to take classes?

I don't know the answer to your question. Here is a link to the department that may be of some help.
Department of Theatre & Dance - Home

I have NEVER traveled by bus/train to go shopping at the Arden Fair mall in Sacramento, and I do not know anybody that has. Not having a car first year definitely sucks, but if you can find an upperclassman to buy one for you it'll be all good. There's ways around EVERYTHING at UC Davis. Seriously, that's half the fun ;).

Also forget the suicide rate, kids are gonna kill themselves everywhere. Cornell has a very high suicide rate, does that make it a bad school? As long as YOU don't kill YOURSELF, it will be fine.

I'll help you with your list of Pros/Cons

Pro: Good/easy classes (if you can pick them well), good campus, good location to SF/Tahoe/etc if you have a car

Con: Boring as hell, not much to do, and boring as hell.

I heard UCD doesn't let you bring a car.

It's not that they're strictly telling you that cars are not allowed, it's just that you'll have a hard time getting a permit. That doesn't stop you from parking on the streets though. I have a friend who brought his car up. He just parks it near his dorm on the streets and doesn't complain.

OMG. My friends actually impulsively dragged me to go to Arden Mall by bus.. let me say it was a horrible experience. They were so directionally-challenged. We wound up in West Sacramento's Westfield and took the train the wrong way to Arden.. we wound up going back to Davis, disappointed that we lost the whole day for nothing. ... but at least bus fare was free with our IDs! =P

Edible Egg, Picnic Day is April 19th. It may be worth a visit. .

its bored as hell here compare to socal kinda makes me miss home. i mostly hang out with my fraternity brothers and friends. theres no big club parties like my friends down in socal. almost everything closes at night. but thannnn... if an out door person. ucdavis is perfect for u. i love the campus atmosphere here. thats why i choose davis in the first place. btw. theres always hot girls working at the coho. the campus is very lively and very kind. unlike when i visited irvine. campus was pretty dead and the guide was pretty dead too.

Momotudy: No offense but that was a grammatical train wreck lol...

I'm from SoCal too, and the reason why I didn't choose Irvine over Davis is because of the outdoors country setting... as well as the fact its very far away from home :)

As for boredom, I'm hoping to spend time in clubs (plan on trying my hands on Polo, which I hear Davis has!) as well as skiing and pre-vet stuff.

sorry about that. hahaha. i was just thinking out loud and started rambling. please excuse my fobbyness. =]

random thoughts on UCD

-its a rural/suburban college town. So, if you are interested in urban, it will not meet your needs
-it seems very safe.
-nice balance of academics and social
-if you live in Cuarto, you can easily have a car that you park on the street
-close to skiing is a plus
-good school spirit
-whenever I meet someone who graduated from UCD, I ask them if they liked it and 100% say yes. So, I think it is somewhat self selecting. Those who choose to go there and graduate, feel they have had a good experience

Lol thanks for the input everyone. :]

If you aren't "feeling it" for Davis, but are wishing you could go to another school you've been accepted to, then go for it! Over 40,000 applicants wanted Davis (including my daughter). Some of them (like my daughter) see Davis as her only choice, because she wants to go there so bad. There are so many schools in the state for you to choose from if you got into UCD. Pick one that lights you up & have a great 4 yrs & leave Davis to those who really want to go there.
