UCD vs UCSD

im majoring in psych and i want to go towards dentistry as a career

well my things is that i know a few people already at davis and a couple friends that will be attending davis in the fall. i love the small college town and the health advising center.

i was just in sd yesterday for admit day and i think the campus is gorgeous esp the neighboring ocean. i know ucsd is ranked higher and great for science im just concerned that my gpa will suffer from the heightened competition. also i dont know anybody in sd....

which would you choose

i haven't heard that it's too competitive at ucsd

UCSD. :)

I'm sure you'll do fine and I think UCSD can offer you more when it comes to the "sciences." I hear the competition at UCSD isn't so bad.. Not as cutthroat as UCLA or Cal. That's not to say there isn't competition but I'm sure if you work hard, you'll do fine.

Maybe.. It'll be better to start with a clean slate? Make some new friends.. Become more independent.

^Um CR UCD is also extremely strong in the "sciences." It is what they are known for.

^ but which of the two colleges is named "the hottest school for science"?

...ucsd is.

^Seems that is all you have to offer^.....always the rankings instead of looking at the individual schools for what they have to offer. UCD has a very long history of excellence in science and nothing has changed. The OP should choose undergraduate school for fit as both UC's will provide an equally excellent education in biology. I suggest making a list of pros and cons.

UCSD is better. It is ranked higher in the UC system and here are just a few facts about the engineering program.

The UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering ranks 9th internationally, according to the 2007 Academic Rankings of World Universities by Subject Field conducted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China.

UCSD was named the "hottest" institution in the nation for students to study science by Newsweek and the 2006 Kaplan/Newsweek College Guide.

Kiplinger's Personal Finance ranks UCSD 8th nationally for best values in public colleges in the U.S. UCSD outranks UC Berkeley and UCLA in this ranking of the top 50 values in public colleges. The Princeton Review 2007 edition of America's Best Value Colleges also lists UCSD among 150 "best values".

With $128.8 million in federal, state and industry research support in FY05, the Jacobs School ranks 3rd in the nation for research expenditures per faculty member, reflecting UCSD's leadership as a research university. (U.S. News, 2007)

According to U.S. News, the Jacobs School ranks 13th among the nation's top 191 engineering schools, and 7th in the nation among public universities. All five of the Jacobs School's academic departments have highly ranked Ph.D. programs including:

The Department of Bioengineering ranks 2nd in the nation for biomedical engineering. The department has ranked among the top five programs in the nation every year for the past decade.

The interdisciplinary Bioinformatics program, ranked 13th in the nation, is offered jointly by eight UCSD departments including the Jacobs School's bioengineering and computer science and engineering departments.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) ranks highly in all categories surveyed: computer systems (9), computer science (13), theory (14), programming language (17) and artificial intelligence (19).

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) ranks 17th for its programs in electrical engineering and communications, and 17th in computer engineering, a program offered in both ECE and CSE.

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering ranks highly for mechanical engineering (21) and aerospace engineering (22).

The Department of Structural Engineering is ranked 20th in the specialty of civil engineering.

"UCD has a very long history of excellence in science and nothing has changed."

Why don't you be more specific about this "excellence in science?"

"The OP should choose undergraduate school for fit as both UC's will provide an equally excellent education in biology."

Why? The OP is majoring in psychology, not biology. Dental schools do not have preferences of majors anyway.

collegemom,

i was merely regurgitating that well known fact because you seemed to indicate that uc davis is just as strong a science school as uc san diego is, when it is not true. that is not to say that uc davis' program is not strong in science, it just is not as highly rated as uc san diego is.

thanks for the responses. i will take collegemom's suggestions on making a list of pros and cons and look for the school that is a better fit for me. i have been leaning more towards davis but ucsd prestigiousness keeps attracting me.

both are good, you really can't go wrong with either one. it more depends on the environment you want in a college.

^Agreed infamy^

TheRighteous sorry that I misread the OP's interest in Psychology and mistook it for Biology. I still stand behind what I said though. Undergraduate education should be based on fit within the schools of the UC system. I think the OP's interest in Psychology will serve him/her well as a future dentist.

Jhead what relevance do engineering rankings have to Psychology?

cr_book please produce an undergraduate ranking in Psychology for both UCD and UCSD to prove that the undergraduate program at UCSD in Psychology is better.

why would i do that? i never claimed such a thing, i merely claimed that ucsd has a stronger science program than ucd, and your own numerous posts on rankings from u.s. news proves it. but i don't know anything about ucsd's psych program versus uc davis' and i never claimed to.

I'm trying to make the same decision b/w UCSD vs UCD, and one thing that I found insightful is that UCSD is trying to establish itself as a premier college, and therefore is putting a ton of funding into its undergraduate programs when compared to schools that are more established (UCLA, CAL, UCD) which are resting on their laurels. Thus, I think UCSD over the next four to ten years will be more dedicated in the classroom to developing better undergraduates.

"UCD has a very long history of excellence in science and nothing has changed."

Why don't you be more specific about this "excellence in science?"

Why are there so many UCD trolls?

what does that mean? i kinda like that fact that davis students have such great pride in their school. i have heard that ucsd is lacking in school spirit...
