UCD vs UCSD

im majoring in psych and i want to go towards dentistry as a career

well my things is that i know a few people already at davis and a couple friends that will be attending davis in the fall. i love the small college town and the health advising center.

i was just in sd yesterday for admit day and i think the campus is gorgeous esp the neighboring ocean. i know ucsd is ranked higher and great for science im just concerned that my gpa will suffer from the heightened competition. also i dont know anybody in sd…

which would you choose

I would go with SD, for psych. SD is probably more competitive in the sciences. Do you like a cool college town, or a cool beach side resort?

For undergrad go with the school you like the best and where you will be the happiest.

that is just it...i thought i would be happier going to the school where i know people (davis) but i always think about the fact that people always go to college where they know no one and get involved in the adventure of making new friends. the thought of being able to start fresh is really inviting. some people i talked to are like "go to sd, it's more prestigious" and other people are like "omg i cant wait to be roomates at davis"

the college town and the beach arent really big factors because im not a big beach person but i love the weather in sd and the scenic view. i just dont know...

I'd say choose davis. I was in the same situation as you, choosing between UCSD and UCD. If it weren't for the Chancellor's scholarship that UCSD was offering me I would have easily made the choice to go to Davis. But after doing some thinking, I'd rather give up that scholarship and go somewhere where I'll have more fun, like Davis. I went to admit day and the campus is pretty plain. Only perks are the beach, and thats about it.

koolaznpygmy-
what are your reasons for choosing davis? why does it appeal to you more than sd? you're giving up your scholarship so obviously davis attracts you a great deal more.

koolaznpygmy, what's the amount that you're getting from the UCSD Chancellor scholarship?

ask people on the UCSD forums as well for a more unbiased review.

yeah i posted the same thing over there and they're basically telling me to go to sd. lol but i have been leaning more towards davis...

peanut_butter: I'm choosing Davis for a variety of reasons. It's in norcal, and as a socal person I want to experience a change of scenery. Although I haven't been able to visit ucd, from what I've seen the campus looks way better than ucsd's campus. It seems that there isn't that much to do on campus at ucsd, and since I'm planning to go to grad school I want to go to a undergrad school where I can have fun and study. Although ucsd is giving me more money, I don't think it'd be worth it to go somewhere I wouldn't like just to save some money.

nate cali: I'm getting 5000 a year, plus benefits like priority registration, guaranteed housing for 4 years, faculty mentor program, and first dibs on study abroad programs.

i respect your decision koolaznpygmy. im in the same boat as you since i also want to go to grad school (where i will get the chance to live in a bigger city if i want) and i also want to live it up these next four years and i feel that i will be able to do that at davis. thanks for all the insight and making my decision easier. =)

Yeah it's where you go for grad school that really matters, so might as well have fun at undergrad schools right? No problem, maybe I'll see you at Davis haha.

Koolaznpygmy, you risk losing $20,000 over the course of 4 years and may regret that decision later on. What happens if you get to the Davis campus and end up not liking it or not expecting it to be like what you imagined. There's always that chance. Have you thought of driving to Davis to see the campus to get a firsthand experience? How far are you from Davis?

Have you already submitted your SIR? because if you have then do not spend one moment on second guessing yourself. if you are already starting to regret your decision then imagine what its gonna be like for the next four years. for me after i turn in my SIR im going to ignore the people that start their convos like "what if you go to..." im going to be proud of my school no matter where i go, just so i can make the most of it.

Well I haven't been able to visit Davis because I'm a socal resident, but from what I've heard from my friends there it seems nice. Even if I don't like Davis, I don't really like ucsd so I wouldn't want to go there. Although the 20 thousand dollar scholarship is nice, to me it isn't worth it to go to a school where I don't think I'll have a lot of fun. I have many people telling me that I should go to ucsd because of it's better reputation and because of the scholarship but to me college isn't just about academics. Although ucsd is giving me way more money, I don't want to have to spend the rest of my life regretting not going to Davis because of money issues.

no i haven't submitted my SIR yet, still waiting on the results of my appeal to berkeley.

I would choose Davis all the way! (see my other posts for reasons). Post which school you will be attending when you submit your SIR!

i submitted my SIR to davis!
koolaznpygmy-have you heard back yet from Berkeley?

yeah i got rejected again, so guess i'll be seeing you at Davis haha

sorry about Berkeley...it's their loss. but im sure davis wont let you down. make a facebook!
