I think getting credit for the IB/AP test will allow him to register for the higher level class, but double check by simply calling. He may need to grab that class before it fills up!!!
Did you find out if he registered for any spring classes??
Just a little tidbit from what I have heard…the more students in a class…regular vs honors. …the more likely the tests will be multiple choice. Yes…these math classes with 300 students are scantron with MC answers taken in the mathlab…FYI. It doesn’t mean it’s easier, just different and doesn’t necessarily mean not MC in honors, but may be important onfo depending on learning style (self teach or one-on-one).
@VAbogart, sorry I haven’t been on in a couple days. I agree with ufmomfriend, call and talk to Rex about the math class. Whatever class he chooses, have him try to get into an honors one so the class size will be smaller. Maybe he could find the class (MAC2311H) that would work with the schedule he has for fall and have the information when he calls Rex (from what I understand even if the class is full they can sometimes add someone) this way if Rex agrees he should be in MAC2311H he can get him into it for you.
Also, housing assignments are available. Have your son sign into MyUCF and see his room info!!
HAPPY 4TH!
@KBCNY8 Thanks for the info. S tells me he’ll wait for his IB score in Math and then call UCF. If it’s a passing score, S was told at Orientation that he could sign up for Calculus. He should have his score this week.
Thanks for the tip-off on housing. Glad the assignments came early! =D>
@VABogart
Just a suggestion. There may be lots of kids waiting for IB/AP scores this week…so there will be some shuffling going on. If they both fit in his schedule, grab both math classes before someone else does and then after he gets his score, get rid of the one he doesn’t want. If one isn’t available, check everyday for one to possibly open up.
Honors classes are very small meaning more one-on-one with the possibility of tests being not multiple choice or graded electronically. You might need to “show your work”. Non honors are very large and tests are multiple choice graded electronically. The wrong answers aren’t throwaways, you know, all seem plausible if you really don’t know how to do the problems.
One isn’t necessarily more difficult than the other, but different. It all depends on how your kid learns and tests.
Sorry, just my 2 cents.
S got a “7” on the IB Math exam, so he’s going to call Rex tomorrow and see about getting into a calculus class. Don’t know why he couldn’t pass the pre-calc math placement test – he said something about IB Math doesn’t cover a lot of what AP Math does, such as matrices.
@VABogart
Just checking in. Did your s get his desired math class? Ready for move in?
@ufmomfriend Yes, S first was waitlisted for his Calculus Honors class and then about a two weeks later he was taken off the waitlist and enrolled in the class. So all his classes are now set. What a relief!
He’s headed down August 16th and will move in first thing on Friday the 18th. He’s a little nervous but excited. How about your D & S?
@VABogart I’m glad he got his class!!!
We are mostly ready. Be there on the 18th and 19th. Are you coming down also?
@ufmomfriend S and his mom will be coming down to move him in.
@VABogart
Have mom PM me if she wants my cell in case she has any questions during move in. I will be there Friday and Saturday.
Charge on!!!
@VABogart
Hope everything went well during movein!!!
Thanks ufmomfriend. Likewise, hope things went well on your end. I’ll be down in Orlando in a few weeks on business, so I’ll get to check in on S and see how he’s doing.
@VABogart
Saw your post on the uf site…glad to hear all is well with your son.
Go Knights!
@ufmomfriend Thanks! He LOVES UCF! He didn’t follow sports at all in high school, but went to every UCF football game. He’s really enjoying majoring in Mechanical Engineering, though spring semester calculus is providing a big challenge. He’s doing summer school in the hope and expectation of graduating in four years. His sister is in 11th grade and looked at UCF, U of F, and USF over Spring Break. She likes all three, but U of F is her number one choice (she’s thinking of combining dance, her passion, with sports medicine/physical therapy).
Hope your UCF student(s) are enjoying it also.
@VABogart Great to hear he loves it!! Calculus is brutal…eapecially calc2!
My s will graduate spring 19 and d will graduate spring 20. Both have decided to stay 4 full years. Crazy to waste BF and scholarship, so s will have 2 degrees with 2 minors and d will have 1 degree with 2 minors. I wish your d luck in selecting her school…its very hard to know what’s right but I think it’s more important to select what FEELS right. Stay in touch…i would love to know where she ends up.
Go Knights!!!
Thanks @ufmomfriend. Glad to hear your S and D are staying for the full 4 years! Even at the end of the Spring Break tours, D kinda blurted out, “Well, maybe I will go to UCF after all!” She might have said just to goad her brother, but there’s a lot she likes about UCF. Will keep you posted where she’s headed.
It would make life a little easier. : )
@VABogart @ufmomfriend My S will be attending UCF in the fall and is attending UCF BHC orientation in June. We realize he won’t have his AP test grades until July. What tips can you give us now to be prepared for that weekend as far as picking classes go? Any and all tips are appreciated. Thanks!
@kawhocma I seem to recall we were waiting on S’s IB scores as well. S is in the Engineering School, so his curriculum was pretty set: Chemistry (CHS 1440), Intro to Engineering (EGS 1006C), Honors Composition I (ENC 1101H), Honors Symposium (IDH 1920H), and Calculus I Honors (MAC 2311H). We weren’t sure which calculus class S was going to be eligible for, but I believe he signed up for a placeholder intro math class, and then later was able to switch to the MAC 2311H. A very nice benefit of the BHC is being able to get the inside track of signing up for classes first.
Engineering is a pretty set course. If your S is doing something else, then I would look through the courses online and see what S might be interested in that fits his projected course of study. Honors Symposium is required to be taken but it’s only a two-hour class. @ufmomfriend, I’m sure, should be able to offer some terrific insights.
I would also encourage S to be actively involved during the BHC orientation and just try to have a good time and meet some fellow BHC’ers. My S’s school was still in session during the BHC orientation (we’re Virginia residents), and S was often moping about because he was missing HS senior events back home such as yearbook signing, senior social events, etc. He said several months later that he regretted all the moping and wished he had thrown himself more into the orientation session. But he LOVED his freshman year! He’s made lots of friends and has a close friendship with one of his Honors College dorm-mates.
@VABogart Thanks you. Fortunately my S graduates HS the end of May, so I’m hoping he’ll be fully immersed into orientation and not too overwhelmed. His major is Computer Science. I hear so many great things about UCF and am really looking forward to his time there. Glad your S enjoyed his first year! Did he already come home for summer?
