Accepted! now what?

Hi !

I recently got accepted to UCF, and would love to hear from a student who is currently attending UCF what's the procedure.
I know you have to accept, then sign up for Orientation, medical stuff etc.
I want to major in Hospitality Management at the Rosen college.

Tell me;
-where did you choose to live? why?
-what's your major? how are the classes?

Hi. Congratulations on being accepted to UCF. Yes, once you are accepted, you have to schedule orientation. For me, orientation lasted about 4 hours. Majoring in Hospitality Management is a great path, as you have so much opportunity in a big city like Orlando. I chose to live at Pegasus Landing and somewhat regret it. I wish I was closer to the tourist part of town near Universal, but then again, I try and get involved on Main Campus and enjoy it. One thing I don’t enjoy is sometimes driving to Rosen, as it takes about 30-35 minutes. I take a shuttle to Main Campus and most of my classes are at Rosen and take a shuttle down there. I am majoring in Event Management with minors in Business Administration and Hospitality Management. The classes are great. There are a lot of projects and some group work, but in the end, I feel that it can be very rewarding. One recommendation I have for you is to get involved in some sort of organization or club. If you have time, I would also recommend joining Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity. I plan on joining in the Spring. That also can be very rewarding. I wish you the best of luck and I’m sure that things will work out. You’ll enjoy UCF.

Thanks, that was very interesting to hear from someone who goes there!

For Orientation, do they send you information about it in the mail? Because the online application for Orientation is the one for Fall 2010.

I first got my Orientation information through e-mail. I am assuming that you can get it either way.

Okay! When is Orientation (around what time of the year)?
Also, I am very confused about the future schedule. How do you pick your classes ahead of time (look over them before Orientation so you know what you want to choose) etc? Do you get a ‘guide’ or handbook? What days are the best or what hours?
Since I live 50mins away, my parents want me to drive there, so should I take more classes in one day, so less days within one week?

Orientation for Fall semester is during the summer. There are many dates available throughout the summer so you can pick something that accommodates your summer plans. As for looking over your classes ahead of time, here’s what to do. Click on this link as it contains the course catalog:

[University of Central Florida 2010-2011 Undergraduate Catalog - 2010-2011 Undergraduate Catalog](http://www.catalog.sdes.ucf.edu/)

Look up your major and it will show you all the courses you need for it and a roughly planned out 4 year schedule, though you definitely don’t have to follow it exactly. From there, you can get a rough idea of what classes you may want to take during the Fall. Additionally, during orientation they WILL give you a lot of this information again in case you hadn’t seen it before. Once you have done that, you can log onto your myUCF and look for classes as if you were already enrolling, that way you can actually make a mock schedule with the class times and dates.

It really is up to you if you want to cram most of your classes in a few days as opposed to having a full week. But regardless of what you do, I recommend this: Make sure your class times are close together if you don’t want a lot of idle time since I doubt you want to drive 50 mins. back home, rest for an hour, then 50 mins back to UCF. If you have back to back classes your day will end faster and you can then drive home. Idle time isn’t bad though. Maybe you don’t want all the classes bunched up together because you want some study time in between classes. That’s a good option to have as well. Hope this helped, good luck and congrats on joining the Knight family!

^^ I sent in my application for housing on the 3rd of this month…when do you think I’ll have my place on campus confirmed?

Also there’s this Math Placement test I have to take ;
how does that work?

Congrats! Orientation information will be sent to you and it’s pretty self-explanatory. Orientation is long and boring, so just be ready for it.

I live in Nike because I heard it’s the best area to live in. The rooms are very clean, so are the bathrooms. There’s maintainence every week so it’s pretty well-maintained. Just hope for clean roommates/suitemates (my suitemates smokes weed). It’s about 2 mins away from the gym/pool area. Overall, I’ve talked to other people and have seen some rooms of people that lived in other areas and Nike is certainly the best option.

I’m a Biology major and things are going pretty well. The transition from high school to college was surprising for me as I rarely spent much time studying in high school, but now, it’s all about studying for me. Don’t skip classes. You’ll be tempted to because of the newly gained freedom, but don’t.

As for the math placement test, they will send you an email about it, and that’s also self-explanatory. Try to do well on that and the Chem placement test to skip out on the lower level classes.

Good luck with everything!
