I’m at a loss as to why UCF Rosen College of Hospitality campus has gotten rid of all food. No cafe, no cafeteria, no coffee shop (free coffee in Student lounge during certain hours. It’s a Keurig - not a Starbucks). Only food available is a very, very small selection of prepackaged sandwiches (like you’d find in a convenience store, ewww!) in the tiny bookstore. For 3000 people on campus.
When questioned, I found staff to be rather condescending. Really makes a person rethink attending this campus. Isn’t part of the college experience NOT spending hours and hours of your time shopping, planning, prepping, cooking, consuming food? Not that 18 year olds can’t, but they won’t. And they shouldn’t.
Do other colleges/campuses do this?? Really kind of crazy when you consider this is a school of Hospitality.
I do agree with you that it is kind of weird that a hospitality campus wouldn’t have any kind of cafe or cafeteria, especially because students could possibly get training/work experience from something like that. However, the dorms themselves are apartment style living, which for me personally is so much nicer than sharing a room and a hall bath! There is also a Publix and a couple of restaurants across the street.
If you do want a cafeteria, you can always live on main campus for the first year. You have take your GEP classes there anyway, so it would be convenient.
I visited three other colleges, and their hospitality programs were a part of the business school, so they didn’t really have a separate campus. Also, their dorms were terrible in comparison to UCF.
The dorms ARE nice. Much like many I’ve seen. At main campus too. But dorms only house 600 students. What do the other 2400 plus faculty do?
No GEP classes needed - entering with an AA via dual enrollment.
Do you go there now? Does this set up actually work? Isn’t a lot of time spent dealing with food?
I actually just applied to UCF, and I don’t know what the faculty do either. They might just bring their lunch with them. Personally, I’ve never eaten in my cafeteria, so it makes sense to me to bring your lunch. I understand exactly where you are coming from, and it would make the Rosen campus a lot more attractive to me if they had a cafe. As for the dorms, I don’t live in Florida, and I toured schools in MA and NC. Some of the dorms didn’t have air conditioning. Also, apartment style living didn’t really exist for non-honors or underclassmen, so I find that a huge plus. I honestly have no idea if it works, but my mom was off campus within a year of going to college, and I figure that applies to other people too, she says you figure out the whole food thing in time. I’m sure that you will figure it out, even if Rosen is lacking in food supplies!
