deferred :(

Deferred at Chicago and rejected from my ED school. Not a good month. Screwed for RD apps. Anyone in the same boat?

My first post on here but I was deferred. 4.11 w gpa/3.75 uw. 2240 SAT

Thank you for your interest in the University of Chicago. The Admissions Committee has reviewed your application, and while we are unable to offer you a place in the class at this time, we would like to review your file again in the spring.

The Committee will reconsider your application and any new information you send in the Regular Notification pool. Please arrange for your mid-year report and an updated transcript to be sent to our office as soon as they are available.

If you would like to update us on your recent accomplishments, we would be glad to review additional materials. We prefer that you submit these materials through the Portfolio in your UChicago Account. Materials must be received by February 25, 2012. Decisions will be sent by April 1, 2012, and if admitted, you will have until May 1, 2012 to reply.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu or by telephone at 773.702.8650. We hope that the University of Chicago remains high on your list and wish you the best as you continue your college search.

Accepted letter:

Congratulations! It is my great pleasure to inform you that you have been admitted to the University of Chicago, Class of 2016. With your exceptional academic record, strong voice, and impressive accomplishments, you have distinguished yourself in the University’s largest and most competitive Early Action pool to date.

In the coming months, I invite you to explore all that UChicago has to offer. Join us in April for one of our Admitted Student Open Houses, at which you’ll experience firsthand our rich community of scholars, friends, and neighbors. We look forward to receiving your reply as soon as you are ready but no later than May 1, 2012.

Here is what MIT said:

–6,008 early applicants
–admitted 680 students
–deferred deferred 3,731 applicants
–rejected 1,308
–289 withdrew or did not complete application

So MIT deferred 62% of early apps

UChicago does not release figures on early admissions other than to say 8,698 applied.

Of those deferred (however many that may be) UChicago ultimately accepts about 10%, according to the Admissions Office.

Look for another record year for UChicago admissions overall this year, unless the world ends.

was anyone rejected? or was everyone just deferred?.. i mean like on this board not in general i obviously know ppl were rjected.

@truth123

how do you know that only 10% of deferred applicants are eventually accepted?

@nondairycreamer

Hi, Grace from UChicago posted this comment on CC when she announced decisions were available this afternoon:

"Defer: A defer means that we are not granting you acceptance at this time, but we will review your application again in the winter.

Our deferral list is not ranked, and historically about 10% of deferred students are admitted in the Regular Decision pool. If UChicago remains your top choice, here is some advice on what to do next…"

thanks, truth

i feel like withdrawing my app…

good luck @nondairycreamer! go get 'em!!

Accepted!!!

International Student hailing from Bangladesh.
I have been accepted! So damn happy! Can’t wait to meet future Maroons!

I am not going to drop some cliches for the deferred and rejected students. Trust me, I now how you people feel. I just hope you people bounce back stronger than ever. Best wishes! :)

Got the letter after a Calc B/C final! Accepted!

Congrats to all those accepted! I’m a first-year that will be happy to take any questions by private message.

To the deferred: chin up! You’ve got a real chance of acceptance in the spring. Take the time to upload some supplemental material to really show the college you belong there.

To the rejected: UChicago applicants are the country’s brightest. You’ll get in somewhere wonderful.
