UChicago Dorms - Burton Judson vs South Campus?

So I am a recruited athlete at Chicago and I received my likely letter a few days ago. VERY EXCITED. I've moved on to my new obsession, and I am wondering if anybody can offer me advice about which dorm I should choose to live in.

Some things about me: I am very social (I like to party/hang with friends), and I would like to be in a dorm that is kind of a social hub or where things happen. On the other hand, I am a wrestler whose season extends from October to March, so on some weekends I'm going to have to ditch the social scene for much needed sleep. I definitely want a single so that I can do this (and I like my privacy), so I'm not considering Max Palevsky. I'm not a very quirky person (why I'm not considering Snell-Hitchcock), but I like the homey feel of a hogwartz type dorm. Finally, I want to live in a dorm where a Jock like myself would get along with his dorm-mates and feel welcome.

I've got my choice narrowed down to two dorms: Burton-Judson and South Campus. But I have some questions because much of the info online is sparse or uninformative. They are as follows--

Are singles in these two dorms available to freshmen?
How is the walk to the gyms (especially in -20 degree weather)? Is it really only 10 minutes?

So what do you think based on my info? Any advice, information, or personal experiences with these dorms would be very appreciated.

Thanks

Congrats on your Likely letter!

Will start by telling you that I am a parent of an athlete living in a single in BJ. It was her first choice dorm, and she is very very happy there. Will say though, that she was not particularly interested in partying. Also, has not found many(any?) other athletes there…

As for the walk to the gyms, it doesn’t seem to be too bad so far - but keep in mind she’s a first year and it hasn’t gotten too cold in Chicago yet! It definitely truely is 10 minutes or less and a fairly pleasant walk.

She also has friends in South and definitely reports it to be more of a party scene - that’s not to say there isn’t plenty of socializing in BJ - just not as party focused. Hope this helps…

Hey, so I’m a first year here and I live in BJ. While I’m not a recruited athlete, I am on the men’s novice crew team so I’m lifting 5 or 6 times a week with several other mornings going to the gym to row. Honestly, since I go in the mornings and at nights getting to the gym is a pain. I jog and it takes about 5 minutes, but it’s still cold and it’s not hard to see why most of the recruited athletes live in Max.

BJ is definitely not party focused, although there are occasionally dorm parties in some of the bigger houses. I live in a small house in BJ with about 40 people, so it’s pretty close knit and homey. South and Max (and the frat houses) are where the social scene tend to be at, but there are almost no singles. However, if you’re looking to party you’ll always be able to go to the frats where most of the larger parties tend to be anyways. I live in a 2-room double which is really nice, it’s very big, you get a roommate but there’s still a lot of privacy. So you can either get that or a single in BJ but you’d probably get a double in South.

To be honest, though, BJ is pretty apathetic to sports in general. I would know because I’m the IM Sports rep/captain/resident jock for coulter house and enthusiasm is pretty low. That said, you’ll find at least several other people who are pretty athletic and into that sort of stuff. If you can find a way to request coulter where I live, i guarantee you’d have at least one other person like you. feel free to pm me if you want to talk
