UChicago EA Applicants 2018

From what I heard, since it’s so easy to change your major, they don’t really care about what you apply as. Most people change their majors anyway

I also applied for economics neontissues!

Applied for South Asian Studies, and made that theme (my self-study of Bengali) a theme across my essays, so hopefully that will be helpful!

But I feel like there is definitely a surplus of over eager prospective Econ majors applying (like me).

@impressionistic yeaaaa!!! I see you applied to GU as well. We’d probs be great friends in real life ^.^

applied for history

I saw you on that board too, neontissues! I thought about messaging you but I wasn’t sure if that would be weird. :stuck_out_tongue: I hope we both get in! The wait is killing me!

I’m stifling the pain of waiting via supportively awaiting my friends’ ED decisions to Dartmouth and Cornell.

I see the wait as a good thing: more time before our hopes are inevitably crushed/our wildest dreams come true.

i’m feeling petulant attempts to stomp foot to no avail I wanna know now!

I applied for Economics. Oh gosh this is killing me. I’m with ironchariot on this one. Just send them out now. Put me out of my misery.

There should be some kind of tracking device on all of our applications. When the app is complete, when the file’s been downloaded, when an app reader has opened it for the first time, when it’s going through a second reader, committee review, etc.

We should get notice…you would think it wouldn’t be that difficult logistically since everything is done through a network on computers anyway…

The area of study I applied for was ‘Big Problems’, and its not even a true major, haha!

If I am accepted I would love to share my extended essay with you guys! Its pretty trippy and is about the mantis shrimp. My ‘Why UChicago’ could’ve been better - I exceeded the word limit and consequently had to cut out a BUNCH of stuff (also I could’ve managed my time better - it was 11:50 on November 8th and I was frantically editing - my prerogative I suppose).

As for our Camus discussion, I think it could be argued that the whole college process is sometimes a tribute to the non-existentialist society we live in consuming and shaping our lives, as all of us are motivated students who have given into the conformist norm of “College is the gateway to success. UChicago is a superb college. Ergo, we should apply!” I know its MUCH more complicated than that, but I just have this vision of Camus elbowing Sartre and pointing at us saying ‘Eh, eh, what did I tell you?!’ (in French) and then elbowing Sartre harder because apparently they weren’t fond of each other.

Sorry… got carried away there  But seriously, what would an existentialist Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/Boxing Day/Other Unspecified Holiday party look like? If any of us get in, we should experiment and debate this over some eggnog.

@neontissues They’re keeping everything mysterious, and thereby maintaining our interest in them. One of my teachers equates it to a beautiful woman not telling you when she’s going to call you back (he said he was waitlisted)

i call Existentialist Festivus!

I will bring the punch and the dumb Vonnegut jokes.

@angelaxia great analogy. but college would be a weird experience if it were akin to an enigmatic beautiful woman…

“Eh, eh…Qu’est-ce que je vous dis, Sartre??”

^me trying to dredge up vague recollections from my memory banks (french V next semester is going to be a challenge hahaha)

can we share the vonnegut jokes? i’ll bring cookies and hugs

I was going to make a Vonnegut pun THE SLEEP DEPRIVATION IS TOO REAL RIGHT NOW

I listed Physics as my preferred major. Anyone here ever read Borges?

I am an existentialist! And trust me I don’t want to party whatsoever, we try to get away from anything that reminds us of social rules. But I might still try new thing once in a while. All of my essay were near 500 except the why uchicago, it had a word limit.
