remember that the execution is more important than the actual idea of the essay

I did Apples and Oranges.

Upon reading the prompts, I’d never thought I’d do it. But inspiration struck, and I went with apples and oranges.

@footiesc7 That sounds like a very cool and personal essay, just saying!

I feel like I could have been more creative with my essays, but at least they’re not awful! I figured it was important to show that I was a good writer foremost, because my creative and unique attributes were all over my application… and I haven’t had a “mainstream” education and I was hoping to clear up any doubts about that, haha. Speaking of that-- any other home educated applicants here?

For my extended essay, I chose the “You are you and your…” prompt and wrote about my bookshelf. I buy a lot of books and rarely throw them out/donate them, so my bookshelf kind of acts as a record of all of my past and present interests. I compared it to how the different layers of rock in the earth record the history of the earth. I talked some about going to used book stores too, which I often do Not overly creative, but I think I wrote it pretty well.

^what mike said

I did a make my own topic, I took a quote by Jim Rohn about life plans and went ahead and talked about the life plan I’ve set up for myself and ultimately what motivates me

@fireballs619 “not overly creative” I think it sounds quite creative-- also GREAT. Also, I totally relate to that, same with my bookshelves. Awesome idea, imo.

Hi friends!!!

I hope I’m not to late to join…
I have just spent my whole day going through this thread and I’m so in love :)

I’m an International student from Korea but have been going to school in the States for 7 years.

I’m really not that interesting but I am the only girl wrestler at my school and am also a ukelelist!

Regarding my essays,

I said: Yo soy mi y mis suenos! I am me and my dreams… and I took a pshychological approach to it… talking about how i solve problems in my dreams and in the end, I ask myself: Am I me in my dreams or are my dreams me? and how I figure the answer will come to me in a dream.

Why Chicago one was pretty generic: I talked about Neural Psychology.

For the favorite thing one, I talked about my favorite song “Blackbird” and how it’s a song of hope for me… so pretty boring as well…

I’m so scared… I applied ed to Amherst and got deferred… which I’m actually kinda glad about now! and my golden birthday is on the 18th… I can’t help right now but to be kinda discouraged :(

But I really wish all of you the best!!!
We all are well-qualified here and just keep in mind that we will end up at each of our best-fit college!

welcome park!

I chose the joke prompt for my extended essay. My joke was: A fish swims into a wall and says, “Damn.” In my explanation, I made tons of fish puns. Hopefully the people who read my essay laughed as well as groaned because some of those puns were rather awful, but I’ve decided that I don’t really care what they think because I was proud of my essay.

Hi mipark, are you doing a psychology major too ;)

@impressionistic I applied to the college.

As long as we’re talking about essays… I wrote about apples and oranges, saying that we compare them via subjective choice (i.e., which do you like better?) and then building upon that to talk about how choice is the most important thing a person can possess (basically: people have free will and need to recognize that).

@sea that sounds hilarious! please tell me you’ll share it after wednesday

Hi everyone! Since we’re getting pretty close to d-day, I thought I might as well join in (I can’t believe how active this thread is!).

I don’t actually remember what my essay was. I wrote it the hour before the deadline, so it’s…pretty bad. Yeah.

For my apples and oranges, I kind of used the prompt as a metaphor to talk about how politically polarized modern life is, and how that reflects in a colloquialism as foolish as to compare apples and oranges. Basically, I said that to even compare apples and oranges (which I said are very alike) highlights how value is placed more on difference than on similarity. I didn’t really answer the prompt, but at the same time, I did.

@chat you might be surprised, you never know.

@ironchariot I’ll definitely share it regardless of my admissions decision, but I’m going to wait until after the RD deadline has passed because I’m paranoid.

@sea i’ll wait if i’m deferred, but otherwise i’m sharing on d-day

Hey there, just joining in. If you’re like me you can’t sleep or think because of nerves, but this thread is fun to read over.

I choose the history essay and talked about the teacher protests I was part of in WI and about Spivak (philosopher.) It was a fun essay about the essence of the moment and the actuality of the event as opposed to history.

For the “Why UChicago” essay, I chose to be funny and talk more about the culture of the school. I joked about the existential vandalism and the amazing bookstore with a copious amounts of Deleuze.

Stats wise: 33 ACT, 4.0 GPA, 1/353 class rank.

I’ve been in 10+ extra curriculars, won state in extemp. for forensics, ranked top in state 2 other times, qualified to nationals every year, broke at nationals.

In debate, got quartfinalist in state, then finalist in policy, and waiting until January for my third run at the title. I was second seed nationally at CFLs last year. I was ranked in state for FBLA twice too. Didn’t really enjoy FBLA. My mega moody math team got to the top 150 in the nation last year, which was fun. I’m also published in psychology and poetry. This happened actually at the beginning of this year, right before apps were due, so that was excited to put in there.

Really hope to get in. UChicago is my top school choice. I’m so in love with the school. I want to double major in philosophy and economics.

I’ve been feeling like I have to vomit every day in fear of decisions. hahaha. I found rewatching Archer is helping a lot. I’ve watched the series twice in the past week.

@Debater1996

Wait… Are you talking about speculative realism…

welcome WD! i’m also a speech kid (impromptu/oratory)
