I’m new. This waiting is awful!!!
has anyone started a group chat?
@Thecollegegal Yeah, there’s a group chat on groupme. You can pm me your email or phone number if you’d like to join us!
@dsi411 is that you Chelsea? lol
@AnimeMango Yeah, hi Uma! Haha
@dsi411 Your profile pic sure stands out lollll
Defer me, don’t reject, so I feel better.
I don’t understand why they let ED applicants wait so long… usually ED comes out earlier than EA as a late ED will hurt other EA schools’ yield rates
Me neither. All my friend getting into Upenn, ND and I am here waiting. I HATE it.
@shanghai001 I was wondering the same thing.
Wouldn’t the schools be able to retrospectively adjust their yield rate if there is overlap between an EA and an ED for a candidate? Not sure yield rate is an issue.
Perhaps they are waiting on ED’s because a few “competitiors” out there - such as Harvard - still have plain old EA (no single choice or ED) and they think some of those might drop from the UChicago ED pool? This actually did happen to the kid of a friend of ours who was accepted EA at UChicago one year (he would have done ED but they didn’t have ED at the time . . . ). For some reason the kid also applied ED somewhere else and was able to get his application pulled before those ED decisions came out (how he managed that is unknown since that school’s ED should have been released around the same time as UChicago’s EA). The complicating factor is that while EA’s have the button that allows them to drop, the ED’s don’t - so how DO they drop, exactly? Do they call their AO? Also, this just doesn’t sound like the “typical scenario” for an ED application.
Perhaps UChicago just wants a consistent early admission decision date and thinks it would start to get complicated if they released ED one week and EA’s the next. So they default to the later “EA-friendly” date which allows a good number of kids who got in ED this week somewhere else to contact UChicago and drop out of the EA pool. They have a history on this so can probably gauge how many “drop-outs” to account for.
Finally, wondering just how many ED’s there truly are? If the overwhelming pool is still EA, then that might heavily influence timing.
@JBStillFlying2: one correction is that Harvard does not have a plain old EA, they have a single choice, non-binding early admission. If a student applies there SCEA, they cannot apply EA or ED anywhere else (as I understand it at least). So no applicant should have applied SCEA to Harvard and EA/ED to Chicago. Anyone else read the rules otherwise?
As to the speculation about why ED is not being released prior to EA: I suspect that UChicago is trying to be kind to its EDs/EAs by waiting extra to allow those EA UChicago applicants that also applied ED elsewhere (and got in elsewhere) to withdraw their application to UChicago. Why might this be “kind”? Because for every EA applicant that withdraws their application this week due to admission elsewhere, will presumably allow UChicago to give good news to another of its highly qualified applicant pool, EA or ED. Let’s face it, UChicago would prefer to admit as many kids now to make them happy and to get them to enroll as soon as possible. Presumably they don’t want to defer qualified kids only to let them in later RD because that leads to disappointment and perhaps them enrolling elsewhere. But it is a numbers game because UChicago must set some kind of limit on EA/ED combined admissions in order to allow for a realistic RD application cycle. So I think the wait we are all suffering through now is worth it in the end…it will allow more early opportunities for those still waiting. So I say don’t be discouraged by the wait. My child applied EA UChicago and did not apply ED or EA anywhere else. I hope those that did apply ED elsewhere will take the time to withdraw from UChicago now.
@Sam-I-Am - oops you are correct Harvard is SCEA (or something like it). Not sure why I thought it was plain EA. You can apply to publics and foreign but not any other privates.
I agree that they want to give the EA’s who were accepted elsewhere time to withdraw, in order to get the list as firm as possible. However, they know this part of the admissions process very well and I’m pretty sure they will be very confident about their admissions and deferrals, even if it means admitting more as early’s this year compared to historical. As you point out, the more good matches that they admit early on, the higher the yield. Just underscores how important it was to apply early if you want to go to UChicago!
My kid also applied EA to UChicago and not ED anywhere else and, fortunately, we weren’t expecting any releases prior to 12/19. And I totally think that all those lucky applicants who got in ED elsewhere will make room for my kid so THANK YOU to all in advance!
correct me if I’m wrong, but it appears that majority of people are still applying EA? I think I’ve seen more EA applicants on UChicago threads than ED.
That’s typically the case for any school. ED is a big commitment. @littlecutefishy
this is going to be the longest week of my life
and by the way, do any of you still get emails from uchicago? early november they still emailed me every couple of days, but ever since late november they havent sent a single email about anything. It feels kind weird, but im probably overthinking lol
@littlecutefishy You’re overthinking it.
It’s 2am here and I’m freaking out because I wrote my essay in java and that either went over very poorly or very well and the fact I have to wait a week to find out
@littlecutefishy I’ve not gotten any emails either. It probably means nothing, I hope ;-;
I haven’t received any emails either. I applied ED, if that matters. I don’t think its a big deal. They are probably busy reviewing all the applications, but it could be a different department that sends out the emails. Idk
