UChicago EA/ED Class of 2021

Anyone planning on calling tomorrow to confirm the release time?

Yes! Agree that where ever a kid attends they can create good memories! But I believe that a student and the family need to create a great list to begin with that includes realistic financial, academic and social fit parameters.

Grow where you are planted!

I’m getting a haircut during release time, so I feel I’ll be checking it on my phone and freaking out regardless of what decision, and my hairdresser’s gonna end up hacking off a chunk of my hair -

I’ll be working, serving food to customers. So I’ll probably check it at home, as I do not want to be half-crying during it

@JBStillFlying2 @hotentoth For both EA and ED applicants the timing is fine. No applicant should be assuming that they would be definitely getting into their ED school. Every ED applicant should have already applied to several or many other schools before the ED decision release date, especially with acceptance rates at 8%, 12%, even 24%. No one is a sure thing into one of these schools. Both of my kids applied ED. My daughter was accepted ED but had sent in 10 other applications by the time she heard. My son was just deferred from his ED school this year, but had already sent out 13 other applications.

@jjmama that holds for the majority of ED applicants for whom the school is their first choice and they are going to attend if accepted, but need a backup in case they aren’t and want to make full use of options (early and regular). However, there are some who are using ED as a way to help their chances and they haven’t actually sent other aps - yet. They will wait to see how the FA package looks before deciding to stick with the agreement or exit and apply elsewhere. They may have their ducks lined up (counselor and teacher rec letters, etc.) but haven’t hit “submit” yet. They forego early action elsewhere but as far as elites go many of those either had SCEA or ED as well. All other uni’s with a Jan. 1 deadline are fair game, as long as there is time to apply.

That’s why UChicago’s release date of Dec. 19th is smart - it makes that particular strategy a bit more difficult to carry out. Because before you can be released you need to go back to admissions and present your case, and all that takes time - not to mention that they are probably shut down for part of this week. :))

@JBStillFlying2 its also pretty genius for their yield individually and comparatively. They get to maximize their yield because all the ED acceptances are out now and anyone who’s been accepted has already withdrawn from UChicago. At the same time they are minimizing the yields of all the other schools with EA because most of those EA schools have given acceptances already and now any ED Chicago acceptances will have to withdraw thus minimizing the yields of other schools.

@hotentoth I thought that as well but I’m a bit skeptical. I do agree that UChicago doesn’t give a hoot about playing nice with other schools and will follow it’s own deadlines in accordance with helping is own interests. But I doubt that school yields are penalized because someone didn’t wirthdraw at a certain time. For instance, earlier on this or another UChicago thread posters were discussing how they knew students who have been accepted ED elsewhere but won’t withdraw from UChicago because they want to see if they can get in. Schools are more than aware of these shenanigans. These are smart, driven kids and they think up all sorts of stuff like this. My guess is that these uni’s only compute yield once the dust settles. If someone has already been accepted but then withdraws due to ED elsewhere, the first school will remove them from the acceptance #'s. They’d be crazy not to.

@JBStillFlying3 I agree but I don’t think that excuses the students’ actions (not saying you are excusing it, just clarifying)

It’s not okay to not withdraw your EA app if you’ve been accepted somewhere else ED.

I haven’t finished my other apps yet and they’re due on January 1st- I’m clearly an idiot, but I’ve started the essays for the three I really love, so I’m sure it will be fine. Also, my dad and I have a bet. if I don’t get in, he has to give me $50. If I do get in, I have to give him $50. Although I think he’d give me the money anyway if I get in, since he’d be really excited.

@smartspencer did you apply EA or ED?

@TheGrayOne my last two posts describe actions that I definitely don’t condone, nor do I think they are even permissible from an ethical standpoint. You are taking advantage of the system either way and that hurts the applicants who are playing by the rules.

@JBStillFlying3 I applied ED

@smartspencer, and you haven’t applied anywhere else?

@JBStillFlying3 Several colleges I’ve applied to only require the common app- I just need to get the credit card out and pay for them, which I’m doing tonight. I’ve virtually finished the essays for the three other schools I’m really interested in, if Chicago rejects me, and since I’m off school, I can finish those and crack out a few more essays in the next week.

Yeah, I’m doing the same thing. If UChicago accepts me, I don’t send in my applications to my other schools. The second I get my results and if I am rejected or deferred, I am sending in all of my other apps. I am also going to contact my regional admissions counselor and ask to switch to EDII, as I am in ED I now.

Good luck to you @smartspencer on all of that. You’ll probably do a great job with the firm but not-too-drastic deadline. And smart move with the insurance policy oops I mean the bet with your dad!

@ArchitectL you didn’t apply anywhere else yet either? Why would someone wait till the end of the year to do all the other applications? ED doesn’t restrict who else you can apply to.

Application fees add up. Realistically, if I don’t have a waiver, I don’t want to spend upwards of $500 to submit my RD apps before my ED decision is released. It’s good to have them ready to be submitted, though.

should I ED II here or should I wait to apply to dartmouth? ahhh

Application fees, and also the idea that it’s just not prudent to submit any applications until that ED decision and financial aid packet are received and everything looks good

Not that anyone on this thread would be hedging their bets on ED. :open_mouth:
