i am sorry, but this school is not my first choice, i got admitted as a freshman, its called playing the odds here, i really want to go to Columbia, Upenn, or Duke....and i prob will end up at chicago or stay at cornell

I understand how the college admissions process works, bball87. That is not what is in question. What is in question is sensitivity and consideration for others.

what i was saying, really was, if i am fortunate to get accepted to one of my "dream" schools, then someone on the waitlist perhaps can get my spot....thats my intention.

Fair enough, that's not how I initially read it. But I'm a little tired/cranky from exams.

neverborn:

your HS gpa: 3.3 uw
mine: about 2.8

your college GPA: 3.42 after 3 semester
mine: 3.5 after only 1 semester

your college: Illinois Institute of Technology
mine: CUNY Baruch College

You ACT: 28 (converted to SAT is 1260)
my SAT: 1520 (converted to ACT is 34)

I don't think Chicago cares too much on standerdized tests, so a ha! I am worse! mwuahah

wait.... :(

Just the fact that you got accepted and I didn't shows it. Oh well, gotta work on my game plan. But first sleep...something I haven't done in 40 hours.

wow neverborn, congrats on getting in......

jacknjill, CUNY Baruch is actually quite a good school. I wouldn't knock it.

Spoke with Crystal two days ago, and still no call back.
Left a message on Jerry's voicemail (it wasn't full yet!) today so
hopefully I will finally get a call back.

Odd that people are getting callbacks the same day, yet I've waited
two days without a response.

Financial aid is already contacting me, so I wish I knew whether it
was worth jumping through their hoops at this point. Despite being
27, they want to see tax returns from both of my parents for the
past 3 years!

That makes no sense. According to the federal methodology you're independent. I know Chicago's rules are a little more rigorous, but still.

I just submitted my deposit slip to UChicago, indicating that I will not be attending:)

Someone on the waitlist is going to get my spot. (Pssst, pip-pip, I hope it is you!)

Good luck:):)!!!

Nspeds: Did you get your evaluation?

No, I did not.

Just didn't like the place?

Nope.

I do not want my GPA to go South for the winter...

...and autumn and spring.

And this is a very realistic fear, from what I saw.

I'm now 28, but I was 27 when I sent in my forms. I anticipated this and actually sent them my parents tax returns for the last four years.

The federal methodology is irrelevent when it comes to these types of schools. If they see that your parents are supporting you at 28 years old, they very well may consider you a dependent student.

Of course. When I questioned this they claim they require this of everyone,
even at the age of 40. They want hard proof that nobody has claimed
you as a dependent for the last 3 years.

Technically if you are claiming yourself on your taxes, your parents shouldn't be. I guess places like UChicago are more cautious of financial aid fraud.

Either way, I really wish they would call me back so I knew whether to bother with the financial aid office or not.

It's not only the tax claim that matters. If they see that a student makes little to no money, and that the student lives in their parents' house, they may consider the student dependent.

When I applied to Cornell, for example, they had very specific conditions:

1) You haven't received more than $700 from your parents in the last 3 years.

2) You are not claimed as a dependent.

3) You do not live with your parents.

If you failed to meet any of those conditions, you would be considered a dependent. I think Cornell is a bit more strict than Chicago, but I bet their reasoning is similar.

To my disappointment, the email finally arrived.

No more worrying over a school I didn't get accepted by.

Good luck to those still waiting decisions.

Sorry about that iwantchai... I've been rooting for all the older students.

Although the Committee has decided not to offer you admission at this time, we have placed your name on an unranked waiting list.

It's good that its unranked right? Does this mean that they will be admitting us waitlisted students strictly on our grades for this semester? I want to call and ask how many students have been waitlisted and how many spots there are but I guess they wont have that information for a while, at least not until June 2nd.

-
I'm sorry too iwantchai
