I think Gerald may have been asked to leave.

I check my "IIT Today" out of pure boredom - the IIT(**** school I'm transferring from) newsletter they send out every now and then over summer.

What do I see but this?

Mary Ann Rowan, PhD, vice president of Enrollment Management, has announced the appointment of Gerald Doyle as the new associate vice president of Undergraduate Admission. Doyle comes to IIT with extensive experience in student recruitment. His most recent position was at the University of Chicago, as director of Internet Strategy and associate director of Admissions. His background also includes the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth where his contributions included developing a mentoring network for women. At Emerson College, he led a staff that saw both significant increases in student enrollment and diversity at the institution as well as an increase in student retention.

As director of Internet Strategy at the University of Chicago Office of College Admissions, Doyle adopted online technologies that have made it easier and quicker for prospective students to move through the enrollment process and for admission to process applicationsincluding the introduction of a document imaging system. Doyle also personally oversaw the reading, review and decision-making of 9,500+ undergraduate applications annually, and directed the integrated Phone/Web Center, which handled more than 25,000 phone calls and 35,000 emails annually.

As resident head of Palmer House at U of C, Doyle also helped guide students through the various stages of college life, so he brings not only a well-rounded understanding of the recruitment process but of the overall student experience. Jerry is the father of two childrenSofia age 11 and Lucas age 6; his wife, Christina Gomez, originally from the Pilsen community, is an associate professor of Sociology at Northeastern Illinois University. Please welcome Doyle and his family to the IIT community.

Wow, that's really interesting news. Each time I talked to Jerry I got the feeling that he wasn't comfortable with his job. I'm afraid they may have used him as a scapegoat. It's hard to believe that everything was his fault.

Interesting. Or maybe he was just there to see the implementation of the imaging system through. Who knows?

Tangentially, I called the admissions office today and asked when my deposit would be due, since I received the packet on Saturday and have yet to receive my course evaluations. Keisha on the phone told me it would be due on June 28th.

I'm just so relieved Northwestern accepted me. Jerry, some of you might recall, was the person who told me my spot on the waitlist was virtually a sure thing. And now he's gone!!!! (!!!!!!!)

I'd rather go to UChicago, but if I didn't have my NU acceptence to fall back on, I think I would be going into shock right about now.

You gotta be kidding me. Being a transfer is like being a 2nd class citizen in the admissions game and I guess being a waitlisted transfer is the bottom of the line.

I doubt I'll hear from Chicago OR Northwestern for another 3 weeks. At least I'm taking summer classes at my current school so I won't forget the greatness that is Baruch in the meantime (note the sarcasm).

I actually like that they won't look at waitlists for a while (28th someone said?)... I spent the last 2 weeks camping so only got arround to writing the admissions a "waitlisted plea" letter last night. This way they may actually read that...

Of course I may only be calm because I currently attend Brandeis which is in itself a decent school that I like. Even though Chicago would be AMAZING!

I also just got a transfer credit eval - and they were very generous. I got credit for all my classes and will graduate on schedule (they estimated 8 quarters, which is 2 2/3 more years, actually, instead of a full 3). Still no financial aid package yet. I visited Chicago on tuesday and spoke both to Gerald Doyle and Andre Phillips. Andre Phillips was very nice and understood that even further extensions were warranted... They tried to explain this new electronic system for reading applications, and how it was supposed to make things run smoother in the future, but you could tell they knew it kind of backfired on them this year.

Yeah I saw that too. I found it interesting, but expectable, that he didn't reply to the person congratulating him for his new position at IIT.
It would be nice if he actually does post something tonight.

When you guys call Chicago, what number do you use? I use the one on all the sheets and always talk with Crystal, but I feel bad talking to her all the time...do you guys also always speak with Crystal or do you use any of the other numbers in the UC Admissions Committee contact page?

I never call the front desk (Crystal) unless my question is routine (like: did my transcript arrive?). I've talked to Jerry twice since I was waitlisted. The second time I don't think he remembered who I was. I figure there is no use bugging the front desk, since they usually are at the bottom of the info chain.

I've also tried calling Andre Phillips, but I never succeeded. He has a personal secretary who just dumps me to his "official" voice mail. And when she's not there, I get some sort of second tier voice mail (oh the insanity! :) ) I've left voice mails (both 1st and 2nd tier), but he never responds.

Sometimes I wonder why they even publish contact information! I've never had this problem with NU. Their admissions office is a very well oiled machine.
