UChicago RD Stats/Decisions Thread

congrats emma87, can you please post your stats? what year are you?

I'm a sophomore at a music conservatory, so I'm expecting to be a sophomore again next year (which is fine because I graduated from high school a year early).

4.0 UW/4.9 W high school GPA
3.7-8-ish college GPA
1460 SAT, no SAT IIs

I'll probably major in math.

Good luck to everyone, especially all the EA applicants who still haven't heard. I know the last month has been really stressful, but this process is almost over!

Damn, Tuckerdog,

All that crap, and you're rejected. It makes me cringe.

I'm still in limbo over here, waiting on the waitlist. The first time I talked to Jerry, he gave me a great speech about how I was pretty much a shoe-in for getting off the waitlist. But with all the stuff that's been going on, I don't know if I can trust him. I want to, but damn.

What did he specifically say?

John, what I see is a group of candidates that are very tightly grouped according to stats. I think it is also safe to assume that most of us have impressed various profs and others along the way and have outstanding recs. Finally, it is likely that we all have decent writing skills and put together quality essays. With all of these things being so closely bunched, U of C has the luxury of choosing a student body that not only meets its academic standards, but also its cultural vision. The who;e process then becomes very subjective. It is not right to beat yourself up if it turns out that you are not a part of that vision. If Jerry honestly feels you would be a good fit, then you probably still have a decent chance. My many experiences with Jerry lead me to believe he is as honest and forthwright as he is able to be. I think he was just as perplexed as us at the delays on several occassions.
I wish you the best of luck. However, if it doesn't happen at Chicago I have no doubt that you will make it happen at another fortunate institution.

Obviously, other candidates fit their cultural vision better than I. I honestly have no problem with the actual decision, though I take issue with the delays and lack of info. I will be in Chicago regardless due to a job transfer for my wife. Worst case is that I don't get accepted at Northwestern either and finish my BA at Loyola - pretty good worst case when looking at the big picture.

One again, good luck to you, John, and everyone else on this blog. I feel as though I have come to know several of you very well. Perhaps our paths will cross again someday - whether we realize it or not.

i still haven't heard, and i'm incredibly anxious. this is painful.

Thanks for the thoughts, Tuckerdog. You seem like a really level headed and wise person.

I also never felt any intent to deceive in Jerry's voice... I actually felt like he was the type of person I would get along well with. I just wonder sometimes if he makes the mistake of letting his words get ahead of his better judgement. But you're right, I'm not gonna go belly up if I don't get into Chicago. :) But I do think the school is pretty much a perfect match for me.

jacknjill,

He gave me the waitlist decision, then he told me why they put me on the waitlist. He said he interrupted the committee and they discussed my application. He said they really liked the courses I was taking this semester, and so they decided to put me on the waitlist until I got my final grades in to Chicago. (This semester I'm taking a broader and heavier course load than I've taken in past semesters.) He also said he really liked me a lot personally.

Then I asked him about my chances, and he said "I'm not a betting man, neither do I have a good poker face, but your chances are very good." He laughed when he said it. After that call I felt like I was 99% in.

Overall, I think Chicago is being hard on me because I'm at a community college, and I have almost no high school record. I think they want to see how determined I really am. At least that's what I hope. Because I'm determined.

Oh, by the way... A very mysterious thing happened to me this week. On Tuesday morning at 9:35 am Pacific Standard time, someone from the 773 area code called my cell phone. I was in class, so I didn't answer. But that's UChicago's area code! And no one in the midwest, much less in Chicago, knows my cell phone number except for UChicago admissions. I've tried calling back the number a hundred times, both on my cell and regular phones, and I always get a "that number is not valid, please check the number and dial again" message. They didn't leave a message, and they never called back. I called and asked Crystal about it, but she said she had no idea whose number it could be.

So I've been wondering about that call all week. It's seriously like a ghost that's been haunting me.

Tucker: I too applied to UChi/Northwestern/Loyola. I got in UChicago and Loyola so far.

My professor said that if the worst chance scenario is finishing my degree at Loyola, I'm in a pretty good spot right now. I agree, and I think you should too.

Thanks JohnM for the response. That's pretty cool that he would do that and say that he liked your personality. I hope we both get in :)

That is a pretty wierd thing btw. I get wierd calls like that too sometimes (not necessarily from Chicago) and I can never call them back...maybe its the serive provider? I have Verizon...

I have Sprint.

The mystery goes on...

So I'm assuming we all are going to be able to find out tomorrow by phone?

accepted by email. mine was sent at 11.00 this morning (sunday, 21st)

Wow, that is odd.

Congratulations!

thx! (10 chars)

ack meant to post in this forum rather than the Chicago one..

Wow congrats! That must have been a great suprise.

On a sad note, this could mean two things for those who have yet to hear from them: they havent looked at your file, or you were rejected and they would rather send an email later or notify you snailmail first.

they were saying monday so maybe they just finished it early. optimism is a great thing! good luck to everyone. i have to see how they treat finaid now.

Do you think that at this point they're just e-mailing people as they make the decisions?

it's weird they are making decisions on sunday

maybe there were going ot miss deadline again & didn't want to? that would explain why they worked on the weekend... maybe

congratulations frosty that is amaizing. I still haven't heard so I am certainly hoping that it only means that they have yet to make a decision and not that they are sending out acceptances today and rejections tomorrow :/
