la_scorcha - did they pair you up with someone with your major? Usually they try to do that.

Supposedly they paired me up with a host based on the interests I put down on the application (movies/television, cultural issues, reading)? I doubt they'd be able to match anyone exactly, though. All I know about my host is her name. I'm really looking forward to going.

la_scorcha - if you end up in Loma, make sure to ask your host if she can show you The Shire, and vice versa. I think it's best if you see both options and decide which one you like best. Also, come with a list of questions (you don't have to write them down, it can be a mental list) of things you want to know about life at UCI and the CHP. The hosts are there to show you stuff, but sometimes there will be lulls so you shouldn't be afraid to tell your host what you want to see/hear/learn during your trip.

I'd also ask them if they're up for a late night run to Allerto's or Alejandro's. If your host doesn't know what those places are, ask the RA, I'm sure they'll know. Also check out the ARC if you haven't already seen it. Don't forget to bring something you can work out in just in case you get a host that's sporty and goes to the gym every night. I think there's a release form you can fill out and bring with you that will allow you to go to the gym.

Hopefully you'll also sit in on a class or two. Usually you go to class with your host, but sometimes that gets a tad boring if you're sitting through an hour-long class. Sometimes it's best to find a class that you're interested in that your host ISN'T enrolled in. So if they're free during that time, the two of you can sneak in the back, sit through it for 10 minutes to get a feel for it, and then be able to leave.

Also try to go to the Friday coffee hour to meet some of the other students and their guests and also the honors staff.

Thanks alicantekid and yackityack for your suggestions :).

Alertos is great. A little bit of a drive, but worth it. Lee's Sandwiches is also pretty good (and cheap), and can't forget about the in-n-out and Taco Bell/KFC right by campus. I'll see ya 'round if you end up in Loma. I signed up for a guest but no one has contacted me yet so I'm not sure if I'm gunna be having one this week.

Yeah, seeing both The Shire and Loma would be good, although Loma is better. Just Kidding...sort of.... :)

I ended up in the Shire and didn't get to see Loma. My host(s) were nice though. A lot of guests canceled right before they came, so there were a lot of guest-less CHP hosts. It was pretty boring at first, but after ten it got better. But I don't think I'll live on campus freshman year if I end up going to UCI, because I live so close by already and it's expensive. I might be able to pay for myself at AV next year though.

I ate at the Campus Dining today. I didn't arrange anything, I just walked in, handed six bucks to the old asian lady and started to eat. (this was at the Mesa Dining commons)

Today they had... (based on memory):

Cereal:

Rice Crispies
Corn Flakes
Cheerios (i think)
and some more that i don't remember

Turkey pot pie
Rice dish (duno what it was)
Meatloaf
Fish tacos
Battered eggplant

Smoothies: Freshly made w/ strawberries (this was beyond excellent)
Quesadillas w/ beef, guacamole, sour cream, lettuce, salsa

Hot dogs (i believe they have this every day)
Burgers (veggie and tofu)

Dessert: Didn't really look at it, except the Ice cream

Ice cream: Peanut butter something, huckleberry, chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, Sherbert... i can't remember the rest, but there were eight total.

Cones: Regular and pointy dunce cap shaped.

Nachos + nacho cheese dispenser.

Soda:

Coke, Cherry coke, sierra mist (there's plenty, but i didn't really look)

Coffee:

French Vanilla, something, hot chocolate.

Juice: Apple, lemonade, orange.

Uh to elaborate on the burgers... I didn't see any meat patties, I know they have them, but they weren't out...

The food was delicious except for the tofu and veggie burgers which i almost threw up eating because I don't like vegetarian foods. I had a suspicion the patties weren't meat when i smelled them, but you know, being hungry dulled my senses so i ended up getting it and taking a bite. Bad choice.

But yeah, the food was excellent and it's the cheapest buffet I've ever eaten at ($6).

It's so accomdating. If you bring in a 32 oz container, you're actually allowed to bring soda outside after you eat. And you can take some amount of dessert out with you too.

I'm so full that I won't have to eat for 24 hours, lol.

And people get surprised after they gain the freshman 15...

i need to gain some weight... im too skinny as a guy

coolman, you must be young. After a month of buffet-style cafeteria food, it'll probably seem redundant to you and you'll adjust your eating habits. Enjoy your dining experience!

I'm young and ignorant! :)

Yeah, I know i'll get tired of the food. But i'll try to enjoy it as much as I can before I do.

They have hamburgers/cheeseburgers, but they make them for you at the grill so they aren't out just to take. You can get a double, triple, whatever, they don't care. Mmmmm cholesterol...

Is there a Jamba Juice nearby the campus?

Pretty close but still a drive away.

Yeah, Jamba Juice is about 2 miles from campus. There are a couple of places on campus that you can get smoothie-type drinks. One is at Cornerstone Cafe and the other is at Juice it Up in the Social Science Plaza.

To all frosh:

I don't care what campus you're at, be very very careful about dorm food. You will gain weight!

I gained weight and had my cholesterol go up as a consequence of the food at UCLA, and based on the offerings I've read on this thread, UCI is just as unhealthy.

But the burritos...don't diss the burritos.
